I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had to have hip surgery / replacements. How long were you unable to ride for, what sort of physio did you recieve etc? PM me if you prefer

I work in theatres, Hip takes around 3 months to heal so they'll advise you not to ride for at least 3 months, knee replacements are up to a year

I had a hip arthroscopy done in Feb 2008, the cartilage had come away from the bone but was still there so it was 'stuck' back on and hip fractured to stimulate growth and repair. I also had one or two other bits and bobs tidied up in there. So not an actual replacement.
I had stopped doing normal activities in Oct 2007, I was back on board by the end of June 2008 but it took about 11 months from the op to really start to feel normal again.
I was lucky enough to have a top surgeon and then very good physio afterwards. I think I went once a week for the first 3 months and then once a fortnight for another 2 or 3 months... then I got bored and didn't go anymore!!

The key is to follow the instructions of a good physiotherapist. I know someone who rushed because he didn't have the patience to build up his hip properly and he had to start everything all over again.
Take your time and best of luck with the surgery.
