I have a reliable contact for hirelings in Central Scotland for common riding but I am considering doing Annan and/or langholm riding of the marches this year.

Does anyone have a reliable/responsible contact for hiring a horse?

Also if anyone has done either can you tell me abit about them? I have only done a couple and like the more "civilised" rides.

Thanks

Hello :)

Suzanne at Kailzie Equestrian covers the South West rides. As does Debbie at Tower farm and Marjory at Lasswade.

Do you have any specific questions about the rides? I was the Edinburgh Lass in 2018 so I've been round a fair few in my time - Annan being a perfectly good one and not too wild (by my standards).

Thanks Jenni!

I actually stumbled across kailzie somewhere - can't remember where, probably when I was searching about the rides.

Well, I don't want to be going at any speed on tarmac! Definitely not for that at all. Other than that as long as it isn't too wild really and a relatively friendly environment as I will be doing it alone. I usually do Lauder which I find to be good fun and fairly civil - but i do it with friends there so i am not on my own.

The only rides where I can think of any speed on tarmac are Selkirk, and a bit of a quick stint at Galashiels. To be honest a 100 metre canter is less on the legs than miles ands miles of trotting so don't think too much into that - its not the common practice folk think it is!

Annan is definitely a good ride - few field canters and then the two mile stretch along the shore for a gallop...BUT the best rides are further north unfortunately.

Kelso yetholm is a fantastic ride, as is West Linton. Penicuik is incredibly social and relatively sedate. Biggar is brilliant fun. Edinburgh is during stubble season and if the weather has been fair the first half is out of this world for gallops - we got 14 fields including a cavalry charge in 2018. Plus you finish up the Royal Mile which is just phenomenal.

And you won't ride on your own! You will very quickly make friends. Alternatively, let me know which rides you plan on doing and I can let you know if i'll be on board. Happy to ride with you after any of the official parade parts at the start / end :)
