My horse is out of action for a few weeks due to getting kicked at opening meet...im going slightly insane not being able to ride, so have phoned up about a hireling for saturday.

This is from a 'dealers' yard, and whilst they do advertise as doing hirelings i am pretty certian they are horses they have in for sale, rather than hirelings as such. And whilst i am sure they have 'hunted in ireland (as everything has!)' im not 100% certain it will have hunted in england!!

So please reassure me i am going to be safe! Whilst my flatwork is up to scratch (schooled mine up to medium level dressage) i only decided i needed to jump again this year as i wanted to hunt (having not jumped for 3 years probs).

I know my horse inside out so there is not way i will fall off her, however a younger bigger horse jumping hedges im not convinced!!

So please assure me that no-one would hire out unsafe hirelings!

who are you hunting with? Are you likely to be jumping hedges?

It wouldn't be worth their while hiring something unsafe in case they got sued, but whether it's suitable for you is a different matter.... is there any way of trying the horse before Saturday?

Whats the name of the person doing the hirelings, some one on here might know them and therefore know of the quality of horse you might be getting, its not unusual for a dealer to do hirelings its a way of the horses earning there living whilst waiting for a sale.

there are always a few hedges, maybe only two though, not constant hedges. As my mare is off (who will not jump the hedges, as not scopey enough, but will do eveything else) thought i would take the oppertunity to give myself the option to do them! With the chid and lec btw.

That is what i thought...they have their reputation to keep...but everyone keep winding me up about it!

No way of trying it before sat...but will ask lots of q's when i phone tom

Ive heard of Ryan Crumley but dont know anything about him, put a post on NL to see if anyone knows of him and the quality if his hirelings.
I would of thought when you hire a hunter you have to say your size weight etc plus details of your riding ability, so as not to get one thats unsuitable.

I looked at his site yesterday as was investigating possible dealers to contact. I would lay money on you being safe on a horse from him, probably more so for jumping than on your own horse. I'd imagine his horses are point and sit types. Bet you have a good day, have a large slow gin, smile and enjoy. If you were to come off I bet it'd be because you were jumped out the saddle and nothing else.

I'll go in your place for you hee hee )

I have been riding hirelings from a lady in the R&WH country for many, many years.
It started off with my Neddy being lame on various occasions and then went on, some years later, to me having to ride a hireling due to lack of time as my (now late) parents were not well and I had no time to feed, exercise, clip, etc. etc:
I always look after her horse as I would my own and I have been hunting this particular person for 3 seasons.
However, many people who sit on hirelings are, sadly, no respecters of horseflesh.
I am quite sure you do not fall into that category.
So go out - and enjoy yourselves.

Ryan Crumley's horses are lovely and he's a top bloke too! I would imagine he would have tried them himself on the field before hiring them as he's often out hunting with us on various dealers.
