Someone near where I keep my horse has built a sandschool and I asked them if they would consider hiring it out so I have somewhere to school.

They have said yes, but asked if I could do some research into how much people charge.

So could you all tell me how much you charge/pay to hire sand schools for private use?

Bearing in mind it is not a equine centre but just a private sandschool I figured it would be less, but most people seem to quote about £20 an hour. This seems a hell of a lot since this is how much I pay for lessons in a sandschool.

Please help

I pay £10 for the hour to a friend and leave the school in the same state as I found it e.g put showjumps away if I have been using them and clearing the school of any muck. It seems to work really well for me. Just bear in mind that as it is a private school if anything happens to you or your horse then its on your own head as the owner will not be insured to hire it out.

Blimey! I'm undercharging! I've got a 20x40 rubber/silica sand outdoor with basic wings/blocks/poles and charge £5 per session (usually an hour). Expect them to pick up droppings and clear jumps when finished. A friend with a 60x20 indoor with jumps only charges £10 per hour.

Also, they probably won't have planning permission to hire it out so you'd need to be discreet and not shout it from the houses where you're going! For that reason alone, I wouldn't pay more than £10, leave it as tidy as you found it (including removing any muck your horse was nice enough to leave) and make sure your insurance is valid and sufficient.

I used to pay £5 an hour to use a school-this was a while back though. Could you offer them a fixed amount per week for say 3 sessions? It might bring the price down of individual sessions. I wouldn't expect to pay more than £10 unless it had a fab surface (levelled regularly) and great jumps.

I'd like to find out how much is the average cost as well - at the moment I'm looking at different livery yards - there is one small DIY near my house thats £20 for DIY livery but they have no school. Theres one a bit further away with a floodlit sand school, who charge £35 a week DIY, and I could use their school however often I liked, so wouldn't be impressed if I had to pay lots extra to hire a school! I think £5 sounds reasonable, espec. since many people will use at least 3/4 sessions a week - £15 a session is daylight robbery!

I've been paying everything between £5 to £20 to hire a school.
(I've been out a lot recently trying, and failing to desensitize my ex-racer to being sensible at new places)

The £5 schools are generally owned by small private yards, who'd not really thought about hiring it before, but when I asked, just asked for a nominal £5. The £20 places are smart livery/competition yards. Most small/medium sized livery yards charge £10 per hour's hire.

I sometimes hire the school closest to me for £15 an hour although it is a riding school and livery yard. For a school on a private yard I would expect to pay no more than £5-£10 an hour and leave it in a tidy state.

When we were at the old yard and had to hire out a school from other yards we paid £5 for a hour - this was a lovely sand and rubber arena that was rolled before we went in and had use of jumps :)

The owner was lovely - if you only used it for 45 mins she would only charge £3.75

£10 for a normal 20 x 40 i have paid £15 for use of a competition centres 20 x 60.
but echo the fact they proably have planning restrictions & so will need to be "discreet"

I seem to have one extreme or the other. I can either box up and travel for 30 mins and have a choice of 2 for NOTHING! Using jumps if I wish to.

Or I can use the arena that the question refers to for £15 :O

It is not huge and it's not got a full set of jumps. The prblem is that they rang round local equestrian centres and asked how much they charge. They tend to charge £20 but with jumps and the school is bigger.

Oh well, I will use it if I am desparate and in a rush and I will keep asking around locally. Thanks for the replies
