Hiring out clippers.

I have two good sets of clippers, one big pair of Listers which would go though a yak and a set of cordless wahl avalons which are very quiet and easy to use with no tensioning etc.
I have never charged to clip other peoples horses as I am too scared I would bugger it up.
Was thinking I could hire them out to make myself a bit of pocket money over the winter. Do you think this is a good idea?
Would you need any special insurence? Or just have people leave a deposit?
Could only do it for friends as then I wouldn't have to worry about deposits etc.
o and how much to charge?

Thanks alot, I know before I had clippers I would rather pay to hire out but there doesn't seem anyone in my area that does this.
 
IMO, the amount you could charge wouldnt cover the risk and wear to the clippers.....

If people have numerous horses to clip, chances are they have their own clippers. If they don't, they can get someone to clip for £25 odd, so I can't see how much they would want to pay to hire clippers. You would have the hassle of sharpening blades which would also eat into your profit....
 
The best way to make money out of your clippers is to actually do the clipping of the horses yourself & charge a resonable amount for doing it. You will ensure that the clippers are not over worked & burn out. You will not drop them & snap off teeth from the blades & have to pay out between £30 & £40 for replacement blades & your clippers will remain in good condition.

Lending them, renting them is a certain way to ensure their condition rapidly deteriorates & they will then need replacing a lot sooner thus swallowing up anything you've actually made. ;).
 
I personally would never loan out mine unless I stood over them or made sure I was on the yard at the time so I could check that they were regularly oiled, cooled and generally looked after.
