My friend needs to go to the vet tomorrow which wouldn't normally be a problem as her mum would take her in my trailer. Only her Nan has been taken ill and so her mum has had to drive up there. I can drive her only I also usually use her mum's car to tow with. Follow?

So basically, I have my trailer but don't have a car and weirdly I don't know anyone I can borrow from (must be the only horsey person in the country who doesn't!)

Can you hire 4x4s to tow with? I'm betting it's silly expensive?

I looked into this when I was trying to find a way to get to shows as I was kindly offered a trailer to use, but nothing to tow with! So I rang up the hire car companies which do 4x4's but unfortunately they do not have towbars as it's against their policy and apparently it's not covered in their insurance :(

I had the same problem when I had a hire car as mine was in the garage. We eventually had to get my insurance company to provide cover for the hire car and check that it would also be covered for towing. The hire company's insurance doesn't cover the car for towing even if the car has a towbar. The hire company took a copy of my updated insurance certificate which covered their car. It cost about £30 extra on my usual policy for this to be done (both cars were freelanders), you need the registration and list price of the car you are hiring. it's a faff but can be done. You have to speak to your insurance company and the hire company to make sure that everyone is happy you are covered.

Yes you can but they are like hens teeth. As someone else has posted, hire companies don't normally have tow systems on their vehicles due to insurance issues.

I managed to hire a transit van from a commercial hire centre when I needed to get to a regional final show a couple of years ago and my tow vehicle was not available.

It was a nightmare to arrange and luckily I was confident driving a long wheelbased transit with a trailer on the back. Not for everyone but needs must and all that

You might be better off googling and trying to find a site which allows lorry / trailer owners to advertise hiring their private lorries. You may find one local which is a small vehicle and hire that for the day instead of trying to find a tow vehicle.

good luck!
