My horse Dancer, 17 bay thoroughbred mare, recently broke out into hives (not itchy to her) for about a week and a half. They are finally away today after having her on 15 benedryls am and pm for 5 days. However, now she has this nasty skin flaking. She has this large scabby like spot on her neck and she's also losing large patches of hair on her legs. Is this common for after hives? I also heard it could also be an auto immune problem?

If anyone has any experiences similar to this please let me know. Also what should I do to treat it?

THANK YOU!!!

Ahh yes my 4yr old has exactly the same and did last year! Vet said to clip out (i havent yet!) wash regularly with melaseb or hibiscrub and lighter rug or no rug if warm! Its taken a while but does seem to be improving, still a bit flakey and her hair comes out in chunks! He said it was likely to be bacterial due to warm rugs. Let me know how you get on

My 3yr old gets terribly flaky skin that comes up in hive like patches. His legs were covered with thickened scabs when he arrived but last night they came off after treating with diprobase cream everyday the dry skin just came away. Will now be washing them with medicated shampoo. The hive type patches came up on his neck/chest because he was too hot, now he has very light rug and is much happier. Amazing the effects of being too hot can have so id certainly check this out first
