My vet attached a ligature to the inside of my horses ear almost 3 weeks ago. He has a big sarcoid-looking lump in his ear (It is NOT a sarcoid, it has been through the sarcoid specialist at Leahurst) but is a something papalomis virus or something?

Anyway the lump was hanging on by a thread and vet said ligature would most probably get it off within 2 days. It has been 3 weeks and it is still there. Shall I leave it a bit longer, ring or the vet? Can the ligature stay on indefinitely?

Thanks

That does seem a long time - my horse had one put on a warty thing on his girth area and it dropped off within 24 hrs.....maybe give the vet a call?

One of my boys had a ligature applied to a small sarcoid (about 1.5cm diameter) on his sheath recently. It took 18 days before the sarcoid dropped off, and for a few days before that it was clear that it was going to drop off soon.

My vet said the ligature was made of soluble suture material. I asked him how long it would be before it dissolved, and although he couldn't say, he did say he thought it would last quite a while because it was applied to the outside of the animal (and therefore not surrounded by body tissues/fluids etc which would probably cause it to dissolve sooner).

Hope your horse's lump soon drops off nicely.

Sarah
