Katie is getting weirder and I'm getting worried. She has a lot of strange habits that keep appearing/getting worse and I can't work it out. I suspect she has an eye problem but I'm not sure (vet is coming tonight)

After a mouthful of hay she sometimes presses her face against the wall

She often puts her entire head in her water bucket, right up to her eyes so her entire face is soaking

She is spooking at things noone else can see, she just stares into the air but her scatty fieldmate doesn't even flinch

When you put her bridle on she touches the ground with her nose

When untacking her on Saturdy it looked like her eyelid had turned inside out for a couple of seconds, (it wasn't the third eyelid)

She seems to have developed a very very thin blue line all the way round her iris

Something is obvisouly bothering her, she's had the dentisit, physio, saddler and vet in the last 8 weeks but noone has noticed anything untoward, it's just a gut feeling I have that something isn't right. She gets ever so upset when she's being ridden, she really changes and it's definitly not naughtiness. She has go so much potential but something is getting in the way and I don't know what it is!!! Hope someone has some kind of idea?!

p.s. posted this in veterinary last night but have put it here in the hope of some extra advice, hope thats ok!

Have you had the vet specifically look at this?

I know some head shakers suffer because pollen agrovates the main nerve running through their skull which can cause strange symtpoms like you are describing.

There again my mare used to love to stick her head underwater and blow bubbles and there was nothing wrong with her.

I'd get the vet out to look specifically at this and I'd be there to ask questions etc. But then I am very much a if in doubt call the vet type and have the bills to prove it

hate to say it but it sounds like a tumour

Oh dear, was worried somebody would say that. Well, vets coming tonight, fingers crossed.

Would agree with what Alibabe said - my friends horse had quite a serious form of this, started as sweetitch on his body/neck and eventually ended up attacking the nerves in his skull and he would do things similar to what your saying...There is an operation to remove the nerve she was told, but one horse that had it done, ended up rubbing his skin of as he couldnt feel anything!!!

Sorry to say this...:(

It's hard to say, I guess there is some very light blue clouding on her pupils but I can't remember if it's always been there or not. She was vetted clear just 8 weeks ago (eye tests in a dark stable etc). Out of curiosity, could it be anything to do with strangles, every horse on the yard got it (one had to be put to sleep) except Katie, she had a bit of a temp for a couple of days but nothing major, I'm racking my barins, you know when you just can't put your finger on something? Hope the vet finds something, although nothing serious!!

Moonblindness did cross my mind but if the vet has already checked her eyes then he/she would have picked up on it!!.I'm afraid my strangles knowledge isen't very good so i cannot say.I hope that it is nothing serious.Good luck!.

Hope it's not serious but do think maybe have a liver/enzyme test done. This can occur in ragwort poisoning. Not saying it is as could be a million different things. Hope your pony gets well soon and it's nothing too bad.
