Hiya guys. Work experience is FARRRRRRR off at the moment (there has been talk in College, is around May next year) however, I am thinking ahead before all the places are taken and would love to get it all sorted. I would like to either work in the Mounted Police, OR work for an Eventer (BIG dreams!). Yet, would need to be boarded, or close to London/Chelmsford...

Is anything like this available anymore?

And would also like to hear, any experiences of your Work Experience?

I just went to my local riding school for work experience as it was local and convenient, had a good time and learned the day to day running of a riding centre.

Im not too sure about anywhere else if im honest, but start enquiring now in as many places as possible, from your local riding school to the local mounted police department, as you may find a few places will get back to you showing interest and you can pick the one youd prefer to go to then :)

good luck!

By all means try everything that comes into your mind as you never know, but form my experience, it is extremely hard to get into the police at all, let alone mounted police, for work experience. It used to be easy, or at least easier, but they have changed the regulations, and something to do with health and safety that apparently doesn't allow them to take on any work experience students, but try it anyway as you won't know if you don't ask!
For my work experience, i went to a local race yard, quite big as about 80 horses all together, starting at 8am, couple of stables to muck out, put horses on walker, then we had breakfast break at 10 for a cuppa and a snack and just to sit down and chat to the other staff then i got to go out for 2 rides either out hacking, in the school or on the gallops, then 2.5 hour lunch (this is because the lads there work from 6-6 everyday for 7 days a week, so the lunch is long to let them go shopping and chill a bit), then just grooming all the horses, rugging up for the night and feeding. Finish at 5 for me. I really enjoyed it and it was a great experience, got to handle and ride the racehorses which was great, and i enjoyed being around them every day :)
Try any sort of work experience you can find, but bear in mind that things like big equine hospitals or vets, or zoos or wildlife parks, are usually booked 1year+ in advance. I'm in 6th form now, but do many types of work experience during holidays, i had to book my work experience at Newmarket Equine Hospital, in February 2012, and the WE isn't untill April 2013. When i rang them they were short for spaces already, so things like this get booked up a long time in advance.
Whatever you do, just have fun and enjoy yourself :)
Good luck!
