Hmmm....a bit strange...

I just glanced out of the living room window, and saw a strange man talking to Ellie over the fence. He had a little whippet with him, which he told to lie down, and then went up to Ellie very quietly, with his hand outstretched. She wasnt sure of him, but gave him a sniff and then turned so he could scratch her back

I think he then saw me watching, and walked off, over to a gate on the far side of the field, climbed over it, and was gone.
Those fields lead to knowhere except more fields, and there are no footpaths across the land. I've never seen him or the dog before, so it seems a little strange. Should I be padlocking Ellie's field gate, too?

Well, if I see a horse in a field I often give it a pat over the fence, and would probably stop if someone was looking at me, so I don't think that's weird.
I would have thought if you can see the field from the house then she is probably pretty safe.

Completely agree, and I would, too - except I wouldnt make a purposeful detour across a field (there are no gates near Ellie's paddock ATM, you have to use the one at the bottom of the field, and walk about 150 metres up to her paddock gate). There is no reason he should have been in the field anyway

Put up ( You are beeing watched or neighbourhood watch signs) and if poss put up a dummy camera on your house aimed at the field, won't cost too much and will put you mind at rest.

Maybe he has just moved to the area and was walking his dog?

Would have thought it very unlikely - we are pretty much isolated, only four houses down our track (and we know them all very well). Could understand if it were a footpath, but it certainly isnt - the field he has just gone into has just been drilled with maize

Perhaps he was after rabbits with the whippet?

That'd explain the strange route.

That's a possibility - there is a man who comes up every week or so with a gun and some dogs. This isnt him, but there's no reason why he may not be something to do with that, I guess!

It's just that the rabbiters I know, will go all over the place, although they do usually ask permission from landowners.
As your landowner already allows guns to use his land, perhaps someone has asked permission to run dogs also.

If he shouldn't be in that area than I would have gone out and asked him if you could help him or was he lost?

Yes paddlock gate anyway. I'd also put a sign up saying private property 'Keep Out'

Yep I would padlock the gate. Can't be too careful and it would help put your mind at ease a little if you've done something to deter any possible wrong doing

I was going to say about rabbiters too, quite likely but they do generally ask permission first. can see why you'd be suspicious, it's terrible isn't it that these days we suspect people are dodgy straight away when it may be perfectly innocent. For your peace of mind yes i would say lock the gate. We have locks on our gates anyway but then we do not live where our horses are kept.
