who's a practical kind of person?

i'm having 20 tonnes of tarmac/road planings delivered. they will only do 'roadside' delivery... which means having 20tonnes dumped in the little area where we park our cars (currently pretty pea shingle)

now, we don't want it to wreck the pea shingle, so will have to put something down.
also, we will then need to transport it down to the stables (across grass).

- what can we have it dumped onto? i've got some old carpet. but not sure how 'big' 20 tonnes will be. does anyone know?
- how can we get the stuff down to the stables? is it feasible to do it all with one wheelbarrow? or would that be complete madness? (we don't have a car with a towbar, or a trailer. we do have a horse lorry)

...what are the chances we could sweet talk the driver into driving over about 100metres of grass...? that would solve my problems...

Definitely worth the sweettalking - often works, especially if accompanied by a Christmas "envelope"!! I've often got round roadside only deliveries this way.

Not sure how 'big' 20 tonnes is but do you know any builders? They will prob have some large plastic sheets you could put down.

But would def ask the driver to go across the grass to deliver it.

Ok, tarpaulin over the drive 20ton is a lot - wheel barrows will move itbut it will take quite a while.

Drivber will probably dive over the grass (for a drink agree before hand)
on a couple of condiotions
1) its not water logged - frozen is ok but depends on how safe
2) you invited them on so you are responsable for any damage
3) you dont mention it to the boss

Good luck

Poundland sell blue tarpaulin. Buy loads of them, ten tons tipped will cover and area about 5 metres by 3 metres and 2 metres high in the middle. My husband and I, with two wheelbarrows, managed to move nearly ten tons in one day, but heck it was harrrrd work!

oooh, ok, this is hopeful as land is not water logged... (well, the bit he'd drive on isn't). i wonder how big the lorry will be... we'll have to remove a gatepost... i can't wait!

a 20t lorry will be longer than your horse box bu about 3 - 6 feet depending on the size of yours. It also depends if you have ordered it in a 6 or 8 wheel (unfortunitaly they decide which size lorry to send) 6 wheelers are ideal as they are smaller but an 8 should get in.

Re: the gatepost could you get your lorry in (reversing) with it there or would you need it removed? that should answer your question

my lorry is about half an inch narrower than the gap so could JUST squeeze in... but, i've just asked OH and he said we'd have to remove the gatepost anyway so the lorry is easier to get in/out (we're going to be parking it up at the stables)...so i guess that's not a problem then... i'm SOOOOOOO excited.

i HATE the mud!

20 tons of road planings is a large flat backed lorry full with the wooden sides. I don't think the lorry driver will drive across the 100 metres of grass as he may get stuck. You need a little dumper truck (you can hire them by the day).

Pay someone with a small 360, digger, and a dumper. Clear the pea shingle into a heap . tip plannings and move with dumper. then put down pea shingle again. Dont even think of running a tipper with 20 tonnes of plannings across your field.Even if the driver is mad enough to try.You are gambling on a huge recovery bill if he gets stuck, plus charges for loss of use of the lorry.Find yourself a good contractor, It will be cheapest in the long run.

I would imagine shovelling planings is extremley difficult. I would get someone with a digger/dumper to move and spread them for you. Will cost a bit but will be done quicker and it will be back breaking to move them yourself.

Ditto this, sounds a farce but it will save a long face when he's stuck on your field! I'm sure you could get someone with a small digger for a bit of extra dosh just before Christmas to come and help. Plus it'll really save on both your backs and get it done in one swoop. Good luck CCP

yep, hire a little digger and a dumper. pushing the wheelbarrow across the mud 1000x or more will not be fun at all. (understatement of the decade...)
btw, i moved 18 tonnes of fibresand on my own by wheelbarrow in 1 day once (it was dumped in the wrong place, right across gate of horsewalker that i needed to use 2x daily for rehab!) and i managed it.. across tarmac though.
i have a huge and v stable 2-wheel barrow (cannot tip over sideways, but tips well front to back) if you do decide to do it that way... you're welcome to borrow it of course.

Even If you put 100kg in a barrow ,you are going to push a loaded barrow,20 Kilometres, and an empty one a further 20 Km . Still in doubt??

i had 8 ton delivered this time last year, driver wouldnt even considered driving into my field he said" id be down to my axle before i could count to 10, and you'll be responsible for the recovery!!!
So i had 4 friends and 2 wheelbarrow, we gave up on day 2 with bad backs and exhaustion, and i hired a man with a little digger in the spring!!!
wish i had good news for you and i wish you luck

The guy that bought our JCB will move it (and I know exactly where his number is) and flatten it for you he is only in Holbeach, very cheap too. He will trash your grass but the JCB will get over it.
