Was sitting watching telly when I suddenly realised a tiny shrew was running along the bottom of the fireplace, and then along the edge of the wall. I was sitting wondering how I was going to catch him when I realised Flodden was staring at it. He then walked over slowly and grabbed it in his mouth. Oops thats the end of that, or so I thought. Flodden then walked very slowly up to me, his mouth closed and his eyes wide and worried. He just sat in front of me looking concerned, sort of an I need a wee NOW look. I then realised his cheeks were moving . Daft pup, or clever pup had taken the shrew into his mouth alive, and it was wriggling. I opened his mouth, picked out the shrew and took it outside and released it.

Now does this mean he is soft mouthed and will make a fantastic gundog, or he is going to be a really useless ratter!

Have no idea.

My Whippet/Bedlingtons will kill anything that moves and the terrier is the most efficient rat exterminator I have ever witnessed. If you want him to be an exterminator then I would encourage 'ragga' play with the skin/carcass of an expired creature.:)

Surprised he mouthed a shrew as they, reputedly, I've never tried one - have a foul taste.

I had a terrier that was a slow starter and would cuddle up to baby wild bunnies. At about two years old something suddenly clicked and she became a killing machine.
She was so keen she could not be worked with polecat ferrets, only with albinos, as she was so quick she bit as they emerged from the warren.
