My farrier is brilliant, however he works for another farrier who is responsible for bookings and he unfortunately is a nightmare...my horses are normally shod every 5 weeks, they are put in the diary but you have to call week before for a day and time. We are now at 8 weeks (not amused particulary as one has soft tissue damage in her fronts and they know that!) And despite me calling repeatedly for the last 4 weeks still no farrier. To give him some credit I got a call last week from another farrier and my farrier had called him and asked if he could do mine as he was so swamped. Quite pleased at this but at the same time nervous as I don't know if this guy is going to be any good or not, and the majority of my mares issues are down to poor shoeing.

I'm wondering if I should post a does anyone know this farrier...but not sure who's out there so if anyone on here lives sevenoaks/oxted area who do you use and I can see if its the same guy...??

Also, if he seems to be ok, do you think its bad of me to maybe start using this new guy, as he may be slightly more reliable than current one!!

What do ppl think? I don't really like rocking the boat and don't want to cause issues if I did swap!

My farrier is brilliant. Great with the horses, patience of a saint, excellent farrier and turns up hwen he says he will.
Your farriers system obviously doesn't work so if the new guy is any better swap for sure.

I may just have to grill this guy tomo then...and explain all about ellies feet issues!

Such a shame though as the guy that comes to me is amazing, but even he says what a nightmare the so called booking system is...

Is anyone is my area that could mention any farriers they have good or bad about?

It doesnt matter how good the current guy is, you have to get him to your horse first! More problems will be caused by shoeing every 8 weeks + instead of five.

So, you can either speak to your current farrier, lay it on the line and if he doesnt get his act together straight away change to a new farrier. Or you could speak to the new one and explain what you want/need and work with himinstead.

Personally i would change to a new farrier

Teddyt I absolutely agree, particulary given the issues I have had with my mares feet. I have tried the laying down the law stuff, tis no good makes no difference. The actual farrier that does the work is brilliant and is the first one to say that there are major issues with the bookings etc, which is such a shame as its not him that is the issue (I'm hoping one day he will work for himself!). For example, last time he came he got a call telling him to go to a new client near me to meet a vet to put imprint shoes on a pony - they gave him no address and he had no glue i nthe truck for the shoes and they expected him to drive about a 30 mile round trip to pick it up from the main farrier, all because they had gone and done a last minute revision to the list! Crazy stuff really...

I am going to be having a long conversation with this new guy tomorrow and explain all the issues she has had, may even take her MRI. Hopefully may well be able to use him going forward all being well.

Yes, would have a good chat with the new guy. If youve given the farrier a chance already then its not good enough. He shouldnt be taking on new clients if he cant look after the ones hes already got!
