Ok so took the ginger beastie to Someford for some XC schooling, just sticking to the small fences on vets orders. An interesting session with some valuable lessons learnt............
Started off ok popping a few of the small fences, had a play in the water complex with just one stop at the ditch which was my fault for not having my legs on. Then cantered through the water and past a skinny ascending brush fence. then decided to canter through the water and over it which didn't happen at all so left it after 3 attempts - note to self do not canter past a fence and then expect him to jump it next time especially when its a very skinny skinny.
By this time however Pidge had decided he was going to be in charge so we had a little discussion before the next fence and then I took him for a blast to try to get some of the excess energy out of him

then on to the coffin, the blast hadn't worked as he was worse than ever going into the fence, head in the air and in charge mode, so another little discussion ensued about who was in control, however I ended up in control 2 strides out and hadn't put my legs back on enough so when Pidge suddenly went "OMG who put that fence there" I neatly popped out the front plate and ended on my bum, thank god sometimes for not being a skinny minny and having some padding there :p
dusted myself off, scrambled back on and did it properly

Popped the trakhener fine (my rider frightener fences but need to get used to them if doing BE this year)

popped some of the small skinny fences and then a log pile where he clocked friend going over the big steeplechase fence and locked on, hence me taking evasive manouveres as we were definately not going to jump that big, my vet would skin me alive
Decided to pop the owl howl which he did lovely

so carried on over the small chair and cantered to the left where he spotted the owl hole again and locked on, awful line of approach but he was keen so I let him pop it again

then finished up with some skinnys on a 2 stride followed by the house and ditch and called it a day as we'd done a reasonable amount.

He did stop at these the other way the first time as was napping towards Sunny, so will do some more work on his own before going out competing in a couple of weeks time to cure that.
Overall an interesting and productive day with some valuable lessons learnt - all rider errors as usual  but hey ho we had fun and Pidge certainly enjoyed himself. Can't wait till we can jump some bigger fences.
So as usual quick question when he gets keen and the head goes up what can I do - I put my legs on at the moment and encourage his head down to regain control but it doesn't always work, I have tried a running martingale in the past and it made absolutely no difference whatsover. He's in a cavesson with a myler comfort snaffle.

He looks fab and really enjoying himself!! Re the head carriage I wouldn't get too hung up on it they all get a bit higher coming into a fence, doesn't matter if it's SJ or XC they nearly all do it. He'll come down a bit when he gets back into it again and with the bigger fences.

Thanks we both enjoyed it and yes you're right when we jump bigger he does pay attention more as he tends to take the p over the smaller fences now

sounds like a productive day :) if he's normally ok over bigger fences then i wouldn't be too worried about it...but you need to watch that it doesn't become an evasion habit- my TB tries to do this when he's trying to take charge and has lead to some pretty hairy moments going into combinations  perhaps an elasticated standing martingale might work for a few sessions? or could a softer bit work? something like a nathe might make him throw his head about less? just ideas...am not great on tack and things..sure people will have some more constructive advice

It was though slightly stiff today. Yes he is better over the bigger fences though can get a little keen occassionally it was just yesterday he got very keen so I assumed it was because the fences were all small? Hadn't thought about a softer bit, why would that make him better? sorry got blonde head on today

I would 2nd the standing martingale suggestion, I would find it difficult to ride any fence with my horse's head high. So well done to you for riding him so well.
Could you find a bit that perhaps has some poll action on it, just to encourage him to lower his head a bit more? I have a horse who doesn't have a high head carraige so can't advise as to exactly what bit, but I'm sure there are people on here who can. Apart from that, I think pidge is looking fab, its nice to see him so forward thinking and excited about jumping

Thanks I've kind of got used to it now when he's keen, and I know he's going over the fence so not too difficult to ride if that makes sense? Trouble is when his head does go up so do my hands so making the whole thing worse. Would something like a hanging cheek snaffle be enough of a poll action? Don't personally like sticking a load of metal in his mouth.
Thank you, you wouldn't think he'd had 3 1/2 weeks off and only been back in work for 17 days. Yes he was rather pleased to be back out XC as it has been 2 months since the last time we went and played XC, oh and I loved it too :D

he he don't worry i have them all the time
my 5 year old sometimes REALLY overreacts if i take even a teeny-tiny pull- he chucks his head really high- so was suggested to try a softer bit with him... so i guess it depends why he's throwing it about... my TB on the other hand, is doing it more as an evasion so he's now in a happy mouth jointed pelham and is loads better than he was in his gag... (he's too strong XC for a snaffle!)

"penny drops" yes that sounds like Pidge, I take a bit of a pull to say oy slow down and then he objects and the head goes up. I see now why a milder bit might help, will see if I can borrow a milder bit, and hey ho it will either work or we'll end up in the next County
