Hobday operation

I am considering buying a horse that may have to have a hobday operation or even a tie-back. I am, at this stage, not really sure how bad his condition or if it is bad at all.... Does anyone know if this is likely to be very costly?

I had hobday and tieback abdou 5 years ago - cost me £1200 then. Horse is fine and it made a huge difference. have to feed him slightly differently to my other horses and he does have a tendency to cough. but he events, gallops and is generally fighting fit

Sorry to be tedious but I wouldn't buy a horse that needed this op (perhaps if I was going to do Burghley and he was the one horse for me - but at my level I would find something else that didn't need the op). Plus my friend's horse died after post-op complications from this ....sorry to be pessimistic.
