Hi
My 17.3 Irish Draft has grazed his hock quite badly - I think it is from when he is lying down at night - recently moved stables and he is now on Aubiose with a concrete floor whereas before he was on rubber matting. I have made the bed deeper and treated the graze myself by simply cleaning and disenfecting (spray). I am not up to speed on boots as he has never needed them, but wondered if there was such a thing as a hock boot to protect him in the future from when he is lying down/getting up. It would need to be soft so that it would give etc. Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks in advance.

I have the same problem but my mare is on mats so I use magnetic hock boots that are very good. Mine came off ebay but they are in most tack places. I also have used Jeffries hock boots as well.

Hi
one of my mares used to do this when stabled, she used to have a massive deep shavings bed but she would always grazed her hocks, i ended up using some gaiters hock boots, seemed to work well, after a while they were wrecked as she had torn them rather than her hocks, but hey - her hocks were not grazed. I didnt like the idea of her having them on 24/7 so she just had them on overnght.
Is there any chance you can get some rubber matting?

Hi - and congratulations on the babies!! How do you have time to do the horses as well?!?!?!?!?

I think rubber matting might be the option for next winter - he will be living out from whenever spring gets here so will hopefully not have this problem for too long. I will certainly look into some boots today at my local tack shop - just wanted reassurance that this was quite common and it isn't a major injury I need the vet out for. He isn't lame and seems Ok with it - but it is a little cut and bloody.

mine did this when he was on concrete so I would put neoprene hock boots on him at night which was fine in winter but could make him sweat a bit in summer. Now he's on rubber matting so they're going back into hibernation

Hiya, i have the same problem with my horse and the fact that he likes to dig up his bed to roll on the concrete doesn't help! Rubber matting is too expensive for me at the moment so i've bought him neoprene hock boots to wear in the stable at night and so far so good. I got mine from ebay and they're weatherbeeta ones.

Thanks everyone - I went a bought a pair of hock boots on my way home from work - I cleaned up his hock and put on for bedtime last night. Went to him this morning and he had ripped a bloody hole in both of them. He must be really digging down through the bedding to the concrete. So, after £15.00 wasted on boots I have just spent £150 on some extra thick rubber matting to put down where he likes to sleep. I even paid extra for next day delivery and it will be here tomorrow. How spoilt?!?!?!?

That's my highlights gone this month
