Was your boy not prescribed anything like Metacam to help him for the first couple of weeks post hock injection?

I've never had a steroid jab into a joint myself, but my mum has. She would happily inform you that it hurts like stink for a good couple of weeks afterwards before the pain subsides and you feel relief from the underlying problem (arthritis in her case too obviously).

When my mare had her hocks treated she was kept in for three days, hacked in straight lines for another three and then I could crack on and school lightly, building it up over the next week or so to her previous level of work. All of this work was done on a two week course of Metacam.

Lungeing is quite intensive too, so soon after treatment.

Hmmm....have you had a chat with the vet? I was told to call mine if there was any signs of increased lameness etc. It could be the start of an infection....although I don't want to alarm you.

Might be worth a chat....chats with the vet are generally free!

In my experience, my horse wasn't lame afterwards at all....although the movement didn't free up until a week or so later.

It can be up to 6wks before the effect of injection can be shown as it needs to settle from the injection and have time to work. were you advised to lunge and do trot work? As I have in the past been advised to do walk work in stright lines for a few wks then gradually build up to normal. It might just be too much too soon? Having said that one of mine after injection was worse by about 2/10th up to about 8wks when she went bk to how she was vet said no point in re injecting as clearly not suited to her!

I was told not to lunge after hock injections as it is strenuous for the joints. Also your horse doesn't seem to heve been given nearly as long off as ours was (perhaps our vet was uber-cautious?). We were told leading in hand and then walking under saddle to start with (hacking on level roads), no tight circles. 3 years on we still never lunge the horse (probably very over cautious!) - But he is sound and x-rays show it worked; so hopefully all will be fine if you wait a bit longer.

when my boy was injected he was on a course of bute and box rest for 1 week followed by walking work for 1 week no schooloing or lungeing think it might be to much to soon
