Hi all,
I’m looking for a nice horse on a small budget (4K) 😅
Something suitable for happy hacking but able to step up a gear, do abit more & not be boring !

I’ve found a beautiful mare for sale well below budget, schooled & produced beautifully. 8 year old ID. But …. They have found changes in her hock consistent with OCD.
“Found changes consistent with OCD in her left hock, which have not impacted her work since but is reflected in her price.”

shes advertised as a hacker / low level all rounder.
Would you take a punt for a quality horse ?

If it's never bothered her, why were they looking? I'm assuming she was lame and it's been treated, so you can assume that she will be lame on it again in future, 6 months to 2 years depending what went in, and need doing again. And treatments often get less effective when repeated.

I wouldn't touch her I'm afraid, she'll cost you more in uninsurable treatment to keep her going than it would cost you to save a bit longer and buy one which doesn't have a known issue. That's before you start on the emotional wringer she'll probably put you through.

At only 8 as a hack/ low level all rounder, she’s clearly not going to be up to much more and for how long at that level. She could be a long time retired. I think there are safer bets with your money, even if it means bringing on a project-y type with a cleaner bill of health.

That said, might consider it if she was offered on loan with the owner responsible for ongoing veterinary care, but you’d have to be able to deal with the emotional side of that.
