My 22 year old horse has developed a hock sore - he's out 24/7 - this has come on since the ground has been really hard. He is arthritic and although gets up OK is obvs putting a lot of pressure on hocks - thus the sore. It keeps reopening and is getting larger. I bought some Woof Wear hock boots but they just slipped down. Has anyone used Hock Shields (Intrepid International)? Do they work? Any other advice on how to heal hock sore? TIA

Could he come in at night with a deep bed?

Other than that, is he lying in an unusual way? If so, could Bute help? But I would start with a deep bed!

Thanks for the reply. He can't come in at night. He's on 1/2 a sachet of Bute daily. I think the sore has developed when he gets up from the ground. Probably due to his arthritis. Just wondered how best to treat the sore.

He might surprise you and seek out the straw to lie on. Maybe increase Danilon to a full sachet to see if he can get up more easily and so not scuff it again. Mean time I would be putting on good old sudocrem which will help it heal but also if you put a good layer on might provide a bit of lubrication to slide over the ground rather than scuff.
