Hog it or grow it and what to do in the meantime?

My cob's mane is a bit of a mess just now.

He has a very thick, afro type mane that will naturally grow down to his shoulders. I had it pulled when I clipped his feathers - his feathers need to be kept short to manage his mud fever and he looked a bit silly with no feather and a big long mane - plus, he tends to run quite hot so was always very sweaty on his neck.

Unfortunately, he's decided that he definitely hates getting his mane pulled so I'm not putting him through that again.

It's now at that horrible "grown out" length where it's too long and thick to plait but not long enough to classify as au natural if you get what I mean.

He's also managed to rub a huge chunk of it out over the winter so he also has a bald patch that makes it look even worse.

I'll be tidying up his legs again shortly and am considering whether to just let it grow and let him look a bit silly or to hog it (although this depends on whether or not I can get near his mane with the clippers!)

I'm at work so can't load pictures but there are some relatively recent ones on this thread -

I've also got a couple of ODE's coming up - both unaffiliated and just wonder what's the best option in the meantime - I'd really struggle to plait that mane - will it be very rude of me to just leave it as it?

We have one on the yard, similar size and build to your lad, and when he arrived he was full feather and mane. He is now clipped and hogged super show-cob extraordinaire and he looks amazing!
I say go for it :D

i can pull my girls mane but i often cant be faffed , tbh i do it with scissors and if you take your time and kind of cut up the way you cant tell. that said, ive also had a few mane & tail disasters :o

Mine has the little horse shoe brand as well. It is supposed to show that she is microchipped but not many people know that!

Yup that's what his is for too.

Thanks for the replies - still swithering.

Jnhuk - he's fine with the small trimmers and if I plug them into the socket it doesn't take too long - well it does but it's manageable!
