Genuine question...

Why do people only seem to hog 'chunky' horses? At the height of my annoyance with Ned's mane, I did just want to lop it all off!!

Does anyone have a finer horse with a hogged mane?

It tends to make a thin neck look very weedy, not every horse has the conformation for it. Plus correct turnout for the horse, if its not a hunter or a show cob (with the conformation to look great with a hogged mane) it doesn't look right. Horses should really be either be plaited, traditional or totally hogged and trimmed depending on the type they fall into imo!

It used to be more common with small cobby ponies being hogged too

I have to say though that if I saw a hogged mane on anything not at all cobby I would suspect sweet itch!

Many, many years ago, I hogged my very pretty Connemara because of sweet itch. His mane subsequently grew back in a lustrous manner that was admired by all.
But I have to say I hate the hogged look. A mane is part of a horse's beauty.

We have a little pony who is hogged. She isn't very girly and it suits her. She is a little chunky, she was a freebie so of unknown parentage, mum is a heinz 57/irish/native type thing. So she isn't a fine little tb type but doesn't have feathers or anything.

I have polo ponies, I love taking their manes off at the start of the season. I think horses look very neat hogged. After all, people think horses look smart when they see a plaited horse from the near side.

How different is it really?

How come no one really hogs their 'pet' ponies?

I do, I hog my shetland! She gets so hot with her thick mane, it almost weighs her down so I just whip it off in the spring every year (so it grows back a bit come winter). I give her a hunter clip at the same time, she absolutely loves her yearly hair cut and gallops about afterwards madly literally as if she feels so much lighter!

I'd hog my other retired pony as well if he'd let me near him with clippers...

I dont really like the hogged look, although I think some breeds suit it (shetlands however don't, they have surprisingly flimsy necks which make their bodies look out of proportion! At least thats the case with my slim one!).
