Whenever we hog we put a bowl of feed on the floor, easiest way to get their necks stretched and staying down so you get a good finish. Cut off the majority of the mane with scissors and then clippers to finish the look.

Is it personal preference how short you take it, or is there a rule?

Down to the wood :eek::D.

No, seriously, I think it looks better short. Somebody did mine and they kind of did it to a point in the middle and it just didn't look right, or grow right. It always looked much better done flat and short iyswim.

They grow very quickly so go as short as your clippers allow. If you are going to a comp or show its best to hog a weeks or so in advance. We start at wither and go up to poll, then do the forelock from the front, the only tricky bit is deciding of you want a flat top or if you buzz down the edges too give a pointy or rounded top - its personal preference.

Our first summer hog was a roundy, but now its short we buzz down to give a flat top, its easier for us as ours only has a low chaser clip so you dont have to worry about where the hog meets hairy neck.

Good luck and post a picy of your results

Agree with quirky, down the grain.

It's really quite easy to do to be honest if your used to clipping and trimming anyway.

You'll get a better effect if the horse is clipped anyway, rather than trying to hog a hairy yak, as the winter coat on the neck will not obviously blend in where you have hogged the mane unless you very good blending skills.

I've always started from the withers up to the poll, but I guess others may do it differently, then I if it's a super think mane and neck :rolleyes: like a fat cob for example, I'll turn my clippers the other way and very gently and lightly go downwards, so you get an even shave over the crest and blend into the mane line making sure it's straight but you don't create a obvious line neither, with a week any clipper lines will have grown out, pink skin (on greys for example) again hair will of grown, so that's why if you hog before a show or some event where you want to look nice and smart, you need to do it a week or so before.

ps...sorry I banged on a bit there!
