Ok, so i have no clippers, but i do have a pony with a rather punky looking mane.

I've been trying to borrow some clippers but seems everyones are being repaired or broken that i know.

So im gonna have to go and do it with good old fashioned scissors...

will this work??

and do you have any tips on how to do this without making it look like its been hacked at??

I really do need to buy some clippers! lol!

Use a big comb like they would in the hairdressers. It gives a neat finish with no stepping. Just do small sections at a time and make sure your scissors are sharp as you wouldn't want them going blunt half way through!!!

I used to do this on a pony when I was young & it looked ok. It could look awful though if done badly, just like trimming feet can.

I have done it with very sharp sissors and taking time to keep going over it making sure no steps are left.

Took a good 30 minutes to do, compared to less than 5 with clippers - so unless horse hates clippers, would use them every time in preference.

hmm...... i may have a go tomorrow, we are not going out anywhere for a bit, so if it goes wrong it can always grow back! lol!
It is about 4 inches long now! Massive punk going on!

FB was always hogged with scissors at the RS - no clippers anywhere near his old yard! OK, I used to have to sneak a good pair of my scissors in and tidy it all up, but it was fine. He looks like a woolly mammoth now though!

LOL this post made me smile. I'm growing Joe's mane out at the moment. He was hogged before I bought him and since I've had him he's gone from the perfect hog through to 'last of the mohicans and now his mane is finally laying down properly.

His mane is MEGA thick with a wave in it, its a bit of a nightmare but then it's lovely to see what the true Joe Black looks like in all his hairy glory

Am I tempted to rehog for the summer....... I'd say yes but not sure of the pros/cons (he had a fly fringe bit left unclipped).

I cut my boy's mane with scissors. His mane is very thick and grows on both sides with whorls on the hairline so I can't have it neatly pulled. And he has a keloid scar under his forelock, which is a big lump so I can't fully hog.

So I compromise and use scissors to create a trojan horse effect.

It looks good on him!

Kalli was done with scissors. Her mane was a mess from a season worth of pulling and trimming for showing, so at the end of season we just chopped the plaits out with scissiors then tidyied up!

Didn't look quite as neat a clippers initially (i.e when very very short) but onc it has a weeks worth of growth it looks fine.

It's now 6" long and still standing straight up.........:o

i did this to my polo pony once.... would not recommend it she looked a state and had to go on an emergency hunt for clippers!------

My lad allows me to hog his mane with clippers, but I finish off with scissors towards his ears and forelock. I find if you use very sharp scissors it is possible to do a good job....
