Ok, 4 1/2 mnth old border collie puppy!
he is house trained in the sense that when he needs a wee etc he will jump at the door to tell me, and will hold it as long as possible, BUT at what age is the dog/puppy able to hold it for the majority of the day? My puppy will soon be left on his own during the day when I go to uni, and I am concerned he will end up having accidents in the house when I am out.
So should I put him in his crate at first until I am confident he can hold it all that time? or hsould I try not letting him out whilst I am here?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I wouls crate, so he gets the hang of holding until you come home, rather than getting confused as to why he has free rein, but no one is there to let him out, he is still very very young and by the sounds of it he is breezing through his house training, so I would not jeoperdise that, however as a baby, he can not be expected to be left to long, no longer than 4 hours in the crate, I would say, then as soon as u get home no fuss, just let him out and straight to garden, so he assosiates your return with being able to toilet.
Ps, I would NOT deny him access whilst u are there. esp if he is asking.

Ok, so just wait until the time comes for him to hold it, and see how he does! he is quite happy to sleep the day away (to an extent) especially in his crate!!! He is doing well with his HT, the odd accident which is mainly my fault for not paying enough attention! but now 98% perfect!
Will him being castrated affect his housetraining like striaght after surgery? it didn't my cat, but want to be prepared!

My GSD pup is nearly 6 months. She has been quite slow to house train compared with other pups I have had. She is now able to go over night (about 7 hours) but the longest I leave her during the day is 4 - 5 hours. She asks to go out 2 or 3 times after she has been fed and I certainly wouldn't go out within an hour of feeding and expect her to last without an "accident". Depending on how long you are going to be out you may be best to crate him, but if it is going to be a long day e.g. 9 - 5 then I would suggest you try and find someone who will take him out. Otherwise you may find all the house training he has learned will be ruined.

Sorry, but I am a wee bit concerned that a border collie is going to be left all day especially in a crate. As you all know these are a working breed and need lots of excercise and "something to do" They get bored very easily, and a bored dog usually is a dog that develops bad habits such as chewing etc.
Good luck with him. I love collies.

Goya..... I know what you are saying, which is why I want him to be able to hold it so he can stay out. His housemate at uni is a springer spaniel, so he will have company and a play mate. We also have a 100ft long garden which he will have access to as soon as ANYONE is in the house!
He is also not a regular border, he is completely chilled out and doesn't fuss about doing anything (that much) unless you are there to play with it with him. He would also have stuff in his crate that he enjoys etc.
Cala - glad castration won't effect him! and 800!?!! wow!

Hi Lucy. I maybe misunderstood your post. It just read as though he would be left alone in a crate from 8-4 or whatever and this obviously gives me grave concerns, for any dog, not just yours.
i Can't help re castration as I've only ever had lady dogs.
Have fun and enjoy uni.

Nuala suggested (quite rightly) that Cala was an expert and a source of good advice so I teased her about it - so Cala is now telling everyone I have written a book as I am also an "expert"

Goya, if one of my housemates did a different course he might be, but if that was the case, I would have to rethink my circumstances! I think there are dog walkers etc around that could take him out at lunch time or something! but it hopefully won't resort to that! and when I am with him he gets let loose entirely so its not like I am keeping the poor dog cooped up or anything!
And acolyte, thats a bit mean, but very funny! maybe you should just write the book and go "ye you know what! I AM AN EXPERT! NER! hehe)
