I have a small livery yard and we're looking at holding clinics and small shows - can anyone advise on the insurance/legals of this? I'm pretty sure that if its just liveries then there isn't an issue.

Argh it posted randomly!

Generally the competitions would just be a couple of jumping or dressage classes, and mostly just for liveries and friends from the area as we don't have the room to have too many people. Would we need insurance for this?

Yes - and someone with a first aid cert. at the v minimum

If you have anyone coming in from outside you would be well advised to have insurance and first aid. There is nothing in law to make you - but you have a duty of care to those who come in to use your facilities and if something happens you could be sued for a large sum. Your business insurance may already cover you - you would need to check. If you are able to run this in conjunction with your local pony club their insurance will cover you. I think the same may be true of riding clubs - but I'm not 100% sure.

My YM & I looked at running some Cashjumping shows at our yard, the insurance was £400 which would have covered us I think for up to 8 events, we decided not to go ahead as we decided the other additional costs made it prohibitive. But yes I would say that a minimum requirement would be insurance & first aid as well.

At our yard each competitor pays £5 on top of the entry fees, for the first-aider. It works very well, but does make the day more expensive of course. In a jumping competition they are needed at least once each time, so it's good to have them there.
