Hiya
My horse has just undergone surgery to inject platelet rich plasma into her superficial digital flexor tendon to help regrow the tear and hole in her tendon..
Was just wondering If anyone else has had horses with holes or tears in their tendon and what you experiences are with it?

Thanks

Rehab is as important as the initial treatment with a tendon injury. Am assuming your vet gave you a plan as a guide for your horse for the rehab? The main thing required though is patience unfortunately!
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been used with good success in a lot of cases, although published research is limited currently what there is is good and ancedotal stuff is good too, and it is a much much prefered treatment to things like firing! (Especially given firing has been scientifically shown to give no clinical benefit - as well as being somewhat barbaric!).

As mentioned above re-injury is a big issue with tendon injuries, mainly due to scar tissue or due to conformational defects/exercise limits that led to the injury in the first place. Stem cell treatment for SDFT lesions/holes is now proven to half the re-injury rate of any other tendon treatment (2011 published work) - although this needs to be done as soon after the injury as possible (i.e. not chronic/older ones).

Good luck with your horse - I hope he makes a good recovery.

Our mare had same injury in BOTH her front legs April 2010, she had stem cell therapy which was looking very promising indeed when we had the final scan done in April this year, we put her in foal, which kept her busy, now we plan to start riding her again in March 2012. She is sound in all paces in the field, so we are quietly optimistic... Yes we could start riding her now, but we want a clear 2 years in the hope that the injuries will be as well healed as it is possible for them to be.
