My horse suffers with frog in the cleft of her boxy foot but currently has a small hole at the top of the frog which is soft and smelly. She has never had it here ,is not lame or uncomfortable but am treating as if its thrush. can you get it there ? or does it sound suspicious. Have contacted farrier and will keep a close eye on it.

Horses can get thrush in the frog, mine had a bad case of it a few years back. Does it have a yellow/ white discharge (I’m sorry that sounds really bad.....) If so it’s more than likely thrush.

I treat mine with peroxide. (Given to me originally by vet) Squirt it in with a syringe, its bubbles up, hisses – quite cool. (No pain to horse) after a few treatments the peroxide dries it out. If you don’t want to fork out for a vet visit plus extras you can by peroxide over the counter from local pharmacy. Tell the chemist it’s for a horse... they give you the odd look and hand it over no problem, well the Tesco pharmacist did... chuckling to himself.

This is why I make my pharmacist friend bring things like Hydrogen Peroxide and Benzyl Benzoate home from work so I don't have to ask for it!

I'd treat it like thrush. It certainly won't do it any harm and will probably clear it up. My boy had something similar. We just flushed it with HP and scrubbed with Hibiscrub for a few days and it cleared up.

Do you mean at the apex of the frog (the point!)? Thrush will affect anywhere there is a cleft, so quite possible. I have best results with Red Horse Field Paste. For flaps I hold them open and work the paste in underneath. If the hole isn't big enough for that then sole cleanse daily (also red horse) or iodine. H2O2 does kill thrush, but you need to clear the dead tissue, too and you'll struggle with a small hole.
