a kind of magic

Yesterday whilst doing our daily checks, I noticed my husband's mare has two areas of damage on her hooves.
Right hind has a horizontal crack about 2cm down from the coronet band, from the outside of the hoof inwards. It's about 5-6cm long.
Left hind has a hole in the hoof, about the same height. It looks very much like an abscess exit site but she has not been lame at all, nor have I felt any obvious heat in her hoof while picking them out. She normally has excellent feet, they never crack or chip, so it is very unusual for her! They were trimmed two weeks ago, she does not wear shoes but isn't in work yet (going for starting end of this month).
Our farrier is not available til Monday, so I thought I would ask on here in the meantime, what could have caused the cracks? I can get photos if it makes it easier.
Many thanks
