A few people have asked to see an update on the mare who smashed into a gate post and fractured her skull. Well the photo below was taken a few moments ago and is 19 days after the event. The hole is what you can see; the yellow Furicin is being applied to around the hole now and not in it, so what you see is the skin growing back to the inside of the yellow Furicin.

The horse has been living outside 24/7 for the whole of her recovery period. She is still on antibiotics and will be for another week. She came off bute 5 days ago.

And this is when it happened 2 and a half weeks ago for those who may not have seen this back then.

Yes it really is quite amazing. I wish I had taken the photo before putting on the Furicin as it looks like the bit under the Furicin is hole too but it isn't - if you look closely you can see the skin and a bit of bone on the inner rim of the Furicin

.

The vet came to see her on Saturday and was absolutely blown away by the amount it had grown over. He thinks, judging by how quickly it is healing, that it will be completely sealed over in 2 or 3 weeks ... and I think he may well be right. It is only about a third of the size it was initially.

She is fine with me but I still don't trust her. She really let herself down last week though - she tried to attack my husband last week, and a couple of days later she went for my daughter. They were both walking along the fenceline with me and both wondered if it was because they were with me? I don't know but she hasn't tried to attack me for ages; even though I am the one doing all the horrid stuff to her right now. I think she has become a little possessive over me.

crikey, that's amazing. must admit, i'd be terrified a fly might go into the hole, i think i'd cover it with gauze, but i'm a bit of a worst-case-scenario-with-everything when it comes to horses. amazing healing.
the only horse i've ever know that fractured its skull was put onto 1 year's box rest in a total black-out stable, poor thing.

Amazing how they recover - Breeze was the same - a massive hole and you could pluck the tendons had you wanted and within a few months, even the black hair and grown back.

Perhaps the fact that she is up to attacking people again means she is feeling better

Agree with you - I wouldn't trust the bugger either.
