Well its that time of year again and everyone at work is talking about their summer holiday. And as usual they are horrified when I say I am not going away for a fortnight in the sun

like everyone else. a) I can't afford it b) I don't like leaving the horse for that length of time c) I end up using my annual leave taking days here and there for horsey activities/events. I don't feel deprived by not having a proper holiday. What do other people on here do about holidays?

My hubby loves to travel so we have 2 or 3 a year usually. We get a house/horse sitter in as all mine are at home. The people we have are extremely trustworthy and I have no problem leaving my babies with them.

we havnt been in a couple of years but were looking to go this year. only for a week or 10 days because of the horse, feel bad leaving him for someone else to do. and we have got chickens at hom and a cat and a rabbit so have to find someone to look after them.

We go away as a family for 1 week and I have a trusted friend who will keep an eye on Bella for me and do whatever needs doing while I'm away. Its the first summer I've had a horse to look after so will probably worry like mad and be texting at least 10 times a day to see how she is

Might take the doggies up to the lakes for a weekend depending on how the weather pans out in August.

I couldn't live without my holiday! I am a naturally stressy person so I desperately need to get away at least once a year, even if it's only caravanning a few miles from home.
This year we are (hopefully) going on two holidays. First one is cheating a bit though - we're going to the BAPSH (Andalusian breed society) show at Hartpury College, then carrying on up towards Malvern with the caravan for a few days. My horse is also going on holiday, which I am worried about (as I am STUPIDLY protective over my horse!) but she's going to the yard I work at for the week so I have told my friend who will be working while Maiden is there, to expect a phonecall every night so I can check my pony is ok

Then we are hoping to go to Malta in the autumn to visit my grandma who lives out there.

I try and go away 3 or 4times a year. I love diving so try to go at least every 6 months. As much as I love my neds I also have a stressful job and live at the yard where I keep them so going away is the only time I get a proper break. I miss them while I am way but know they are well looked after so don't worry about them either.

He goes with me and I get to ride on holiday ever day as well as doing other holiday things, I dont go abroad as anything designed built driven flown sailed by humans is no no for me.

No, as we've bought a lorry instead. I think I'd rather have the lorry, at least I can keep it after the 2 weeks, unlike holidays when you have to get back to reality.

I’m going on holiday for two weeks (the longest I have been away for years), and Bodey is going to my instructor’s yard (I have a championship not long after) and Badger the Fjord is being looked after by _Gina_ (my sis on here), Mum and Dad.

Oh and I’m off to Centre Parcs and then the Algarve, bliss!

I'm praying for a holiday of some description this year. I haven't had a holiday for over 10 years. I got married in August 2007, and not had a honeymoon yet.
Guess what! I'm a teacher!! The perfect profession for holidays, but OH is a boarding housemaster, so we live in the school where he works and we just don't ever get away! Jack also has taught at summer schools (held in his school) and easter schools for the last two years as well, so time doesn't allow a holiday!
PRAYING for a break of some kind this year!!! Fingers crossed . . .

I'm having my first weeks holiday for about 4 years right now, dont have to go back to work until a week Monday

What am I doing? Going to the stables of course

Everyone is shocked I am not getting on a plane or at least going on a break in this country but I love just being at home

We usually have two holidays per year. One on hubbys Harley touring, and the other in Corfu for two weeks so he can go diving. This year because we have invested in a new horse I wont be going to corfu as we just can't afford me to go along as a passenger. So he s going alone. boo hoo!

However I haven't told him that when the new horse arrives in Spring its unlikely that I will be able to leave her for a good few months as she will still be settling in and i will not want to leave her in the care of others.
We won't just be able to put the dog in Kennels and just go off as before, as we can with our steady cob who anyone can easily look after.

No hols for me this year, I have not been home to Wales for a visit for over a year now!

We are building a new house this summer, have copious amounts of hay to make and I have no groom this summer to look after neds and dog (although this summer that was my choice).

Good news is Dad and step Mum have sailed over to norway from Wales on the yacht and will be staying on the island on the yacht for at least 4 months, I am sooo excited to see them as its been a year and I miss my family. Mum and step Dad will be coming over for a week in August, so to me as long as I get to see my family I am ohhh so happy

Yep, taking my first holiday away in a couple of years (okay, did go "home" for Christmas 18 months ago, so I guess that counts). Someone coming to look after dogs at home, horse on full livery that week, business is being looked after by a trusted collegue, and I know roughly where we are going, but don't know the exact details cos I haven't bothered to know - hubby's got it all worked out and I couldn't care so long as it's warm, sunny, and away from here for a wee bit. I've got two weeks off, one is away and the second is to potter about here, yipeeeeee

Usually my "holidays" are working hols - away to Crufts, away to a grooming comp/seminar/show, horse shows etc. I enjoy them at the time, but they aren't much RnR, are they? They tend to be amenities on the very cheap etc (tenting at Hartpury in the pouring rain, fun fun fun!).

I honestly can't understand why your new horse will take months to settle in, and it's a bit insulting to everyone else that you wouldn't trust a capable yard owner to care for it.
Horses tend to need the company of other horses far more than their owners, so if I were you I would organise some experienced person to look after the horse and enjoy your usual holiday..
I get horses retiring here all the time, and their owners are always stunned by how easily they settle in and aren't that keen on seeing them when they visit!
The saddest times are when a horse has come for a short period say six months whilst their owners travel, when the day comes to leave I swear they look so miserable......

No chance I'm getting one but don't want one!!!
Mind you my summer will hopefully have some beach rides on the cornwall coast line aswell as our normal hacks in th sun. So I'm not complaining

Yes we're going to Florida in September and I can't wait. Don't miss the horses at all and I know they are safe and well looked after by my friend who comes to our yard to see to them.

What I HATE is leaving the dogs and I know they pine for us and get very stressed in kennels but we don't have any choice other than not to go anywhere. We went without a holiday last year as the dogs had had time in kennels the year before and next year we plan to go for a week somewhere in the UK or two weeks in France where the dogs can come with us as I don't really enjoy being apart from them. Although I am looking forward to my holiday, I know I will be tetchy and grumpy after the first week or so as I will be desperate to get my dogs back!

we are having 3 days in Devon if that counts??

no time/money for a 'proper' holiday at the moment and tbh i get horse and homesick after a few days anyway
