I'm interested in what people with their own yard do when they want a holiday. I do my 2 horses myself twice a day, all year. I had a girl to help poo pick for the past couple of months & she looked after them at grass for a week at the end of June while I was away. She's now quit for personal reasons.

My horsey friends are all busy with their own horses or too far away, & freelance grooms seem hard to find - so what do people do?

(Can you tell I want a holiday?!)

I have a (horsey) friend who lives just up the road who 'house sits' when we go away. She looks after my 2 horses and 3 dogs. I trust her so it works.

One of my springer spaniels is really old (nearly 15!) and I won't put her into kennels any more as i think a big change of scenery like that would upset her. So she's happier at home with my friend.

Well MerryMaker used to do that for me but unfortunately I'm too far away now. It's v difficult. Don't want much help most of the year but then want a couple of weeks of sod all...!

House sitting doens't work as house is 2 miles from field!

If I moved them both there I wouldn't be able to afford to eat!

Aren't you at work too?!

I keep my horse at home, with one other on livery.

Owner of livery horse house sits as part of the deal!

Shhhhh =P

Hmm actually that's a point, could you take on another livery and share chores? They could help with grass mowing too

Is the livery a friend or did you advertise? I have considered that but am worried someone else might be more of a hassle than a help. Plus I don't have a spare stable!

A friend of mine does house/horse sitting and has own transport so if she was staying at your house, would be able to travel the 2 miles to your horses.

She is a BHSAI, has a degree in equine stuff and has worked with horses here and abroad for about 8+ years and can give you references.

Don't know how much she charges but PM me if you are interested.

Copy us - don't have a holiday! We take in holiday liveries and its even worse when owners come back telling us what a fantastic time they've had. Unfortunately with a stallion, mares, show horses and foals, we can't trust anyone to do them all, so being as they're our responsibility we can't have a holiday. Maybe when we strike it rich, we could afford someone to stay here and do ours whilst we have a couple of days away. Forgotten what a hot sandy beach is like - it's been so long.

I put one in full livery as she needs to be kept working and the others go out to grass. I have a friend who house sits who checks and feeds etc the ones out at grass. She has her own yard just opposite so if any of mine have to come in she will take them to her yard. Mum and dad look after the dogs although the dogs stay at home, mum and dad come here. We dont go away every year due to the logistical nightmare it causes!!
