I have recently moved yards and have had to find a new farrier. I found one as recommended by my previous farrier, called him yesterday and quoted me....

£100 a set..... (wait for it) PLUS VAT!!!! What?!?!?!!!

Is it just my new area that is a rip off?! Or am I deluded and farriers prices have just gone up generally everywhere??

ok that is beyond a joke there is absolutely no way I would be willing to pay that. Where abouts are you?

In my area I think it is £60 for a full set

I pay £32 for a full set on my youngster and £15- £20 for front shoes and a trim on my old pony, so round about £50 for the 2 of them. Thi9nk am gonna stay where i am!!

The most I have ever paid was £95 for a supposed remedial farrier recommended by the vet. Not impressed with him at all, went back to using a local farrier at a standard £60 for cash.

I've just moved to West Dorset. I was only in Hampshire before and he charged me £67. Hopefully I can find someone else who's good but a little cheaper!

There is a farrier around here who charges 110 + vat for a full set - and half the time his apprentice does the actual shoeing! Needless to say I don't use him!!!!!

Gosh, sounds like he is very busy and doesn't need the extra work so bumped the price up and if you take it, happy days for him.
I'm in Hertfordshire and I am £60 a set, £65 with road nails and about £70-£75 with stud holes.

I had a farrier who was £82/set around 6 years ago down in Wiltshire.
i guess with inflation he would be around £100/set now.

i currently pay around £60/set and am extremely happy with the job my farrier does.

I pay £70 a set if I have the others trimmed (£30 each) at the same time, however if I just have a set and nothing else is done its £85!

Saying that, trying to get him to come out is more painful than walking across hot coals.

£100 plus vat sounds about right?? You are talking about Pure Gold shoes yes?? lol

Yikes, way too much, am so pleased my mare is barefoot!!! Used to pay £70 though for a full set.

x

Right then... I guess I better try finding someone else if it means I am going to have to sell myself to shoe my horse!!

If anyone has any recommendations for anyone in Dorchester area, they would be most appreciated!!! :)

£100:eek: I pay £45 for a set of shoes and £15 for a trim.

Someone i know was telling me the other day they once had to have special shoes for a horse (con't remember what they were) but they were £120 a shoe!
She was luckily able to find something else which helped that was alot cheaper.

Your in the wrong part of Dorset!!
A few miles north, we pay £60 for a trim and a set (only a minor trim mind). We have a lovely lady farrier who will soon start her own forge as well as continuing travelling. (Wait for it - she also flies to Geneva to shoe for 1 day every 6 - 8 weeks or so = TOTAL dedication!!)
I would recommend her, but how many more clients she can take on iam not sure.

My farrier is £90 plus vat and I pay £145 for a set with bar shoes on fronts.

Can't complain as when I moved yards and changed farriers the horse was never sound, have just gone back to old farrier and he is coming sound, so I don't have much choice in the matter!

Generally farriers are around £80 a set in this area.

Good grief....I pay about £65 a new set....tenner off for re-fits and I'm not sure how much I pay for the pony trimming and fronts only. There is a surcharge though......its several cups of tea:)

He is a star, my farrier.....horse lost a shoe in ferocious mud on the livery yard I used to be at....he came out next day to put a new shoe on- no charge. He is ace.

Mine is £50 a set and £20 a trim, its hard to find a good farrier at reasonable prices these days.

I am feeling the love for my diva farrier who does not like to get wet, he does a good job and charges £48 a full set.

My ex racer had terrible feet when we first got her, she could hardly go a week without losing a shoe. He wasn't her biggest fan either, she leaned on him, she was stiff on the right hock-which turned out to be a pointer to a bigger issue that he noticed and told us about), he has been working steadily to give her a heel and shorten her toe and deal with the abscesses and cracks that seemed to plague her for nearly 2 years. We've learned a lot about hoof health through him too.

The cheapest I have heard in our area is £40 a set, and he is a nice fellow too, but as my farrier has always seen us alright we have stuck with him.
