Hi,

Does anyone have a good homemade receipe for mane and tail detangler...I am fed up for paying £7 per bottle which doesn't last long..

There was quite a long post on this a few weeks back, possibly in Stable Yard.
Furniture polish contains all kinds of chemicals that are really not intended to be used on animals and may be harmful - which becomes an issue when horses are mutually grooming amongst other times.

Ive heard about people using polish but dont actually use it myself.
I buy mane and tail conditioner in bulk and it works out alot cheaper x

I used pig oil and sulpher on my horses legs recently and was amazed how silky and mud repellent the feathers are. People on the yard keep asking to touch her feathers. so sweet. When we get a warm day I will wash her huge hairy cob tail and put pig oil in it. It's cheap and natural and makes it silky. Feathers were very greasy at first but now getting lovely and silky after a few days.

I use pig oil to prevent mud fever and have taken to putting a little in the tail and mane too which stops the mud sticking and makes it easier to comb through.

Without the sulphur of course.

would that be neat straight on the hair? doesn't it get rather greasy?

Yeh put it in a spare spray bottle and use sparingly. It repells mud well and makes my cobs thick tails look really nice and fluffy. yes it gets your hands greasy but its alot cheaper than £7 a bottle stuff. try it, if you dont like it, you've only spent a quid...the supermarket own brand stuff is as good as any.

I have made one from baby oil, cheapie hair conditioner and water in a spray bottle. Not much baby oil, a bit more conditioner and fill up with the water. And shake well. It works quite well, smells nice and is very cheap

equine uk or shampoos for less do coat shine for abiut £2 A bottle and its great on tails etc
its the red rum one

I've used Mr Sheen (original in spray can) for the last 15 years and have not noticed any ill effects on any horses. You can get it for around 99p in cheap shops and all it really is is a silicon spray just like mane and tail detangler. Have to say though I never use it on manes because it makes them impossible to plait.
