My mum can pretty much sew anything (she is awesome like that!) so I'm thinking about asking her to make me some jodhpurs, I'm on the curvey side of things and if they fit my thighs and bum I can garintee they will be too big on my waist.
Has anybody made their own before? Is there any patterns to buy?
Help?! :)

My mum made me a pair years ago as I was tall and skinny. She used an old pair as a pattern but has never agreed to do it again as it was a horrible job. The fabric is not easy to work with.

Look up Dobbies Jods on Google they do made to measure, I had a pair and they were super!

My sewing ability is relatively novice, but I wonder would a pair of 'riding tights' type thing be easier to make at home than 'proper' jods?

As already said, the fabric is a pain to sew, I was going to go into production of my own designs but never get the time as too busy making other things!
Very few patterns available although I have got a website somewhere in my bookmarks that sells patterns for wax chaps (I bought a set of patterns), jods, wax jackets and if I remember rightly show shirts, it's an American site and the patterns seem ok,Oz

I have a friend who designs & makes clothes for a living. She designed & made me a pair of breeches. She said it is really hard & actually in terms of man hours/fabric, bought jods/breeches are much better value....mine were full seat & had a design on them.

If it's just the waist that needs adjusting I'd be tempted to see if she could do this.

My mum was a professional dress maker and worked in all types of materials etc- she happily Mae my wedding dress but would disown me at the thought of making jodhs!

As others have said, the fabric is awful to work with and requires special stitch types etc due to it's elasticity. I would imagine pattern cutting would also be a nightmare.

Maybe adapting a decent pair of leggings might be a happy medium?

My mum is very accomplished at all kind of dress/clothes making and can make pretty much anything but she was kinda stumped with making jods because apparently the fabric is a real pain to work with. Perhaps your mum would be better off adjusting/taking out/taking in a pair you already have? You can change seams and adjust waist bands a heck of a lot easier than creating a pair from scratch.

Is it just the fabric, or the pattern/combination of the two? Could you make them out of different fabric? After all, you can get denim, corduroy and I'm sure I've seen jersey jodhs. Or are they too stretchy too?

To be honest I rarely ride in jods nowadays anyway, a cheap pair of skinny jeans from tesco seem to work just as well. I do own jods but find it easier to go ride in jeans and my yard boots then pull on a pair of knee boots afterwards dislodge straw from hair then go do the shopping. The jeans are quite a soft fabric not jean like at all so get on well with them and don't get the holes as quick as you do with jods from catching on things or to much stretching in the crutch or on the knees.

I got my mum to do this!

Waited until my favourites had bitten the dust, and then unpicked the seams to take them apart- then used the parts as a pattern!
So great because you can choose your own colour combos and materials!!
Ax

ETA: I only use them for pottering around in and hacking, have bought ones for other stuff. Just saves me spending loads of money on stuff that'll end up covered in hair and mud!
