Does anyone know where I can buy round poles to paint as jump poles? My OH reckons I need fence posts but I have tried B&Q, Wickes etc and they only seem to do square poles. Or is it cheaper and less hassle to buy ready made poles?

You need a proper timber yard more than a DIY place, they will be round and work out much cheaper.
Just need painting!

oh thats great thanks, I've found 2 sawmills near me who make jump poles! One charge £8 a pole and they're locally sourced environment friendly ones. I shall ring them first thing Monday.

I just brought some round poles from timber yard for around 3 quid each. Just need to be inventive now and think of things to balance them on. Don't want anything to high as ground very hard at mo, and know he has been lame before I brought him after xc competing. Just want to keep him interested in work and have the odd jump now and then before taking him back to schooling in a sand ring. Any ideas anyone on suitable things to balance bars on?

Milk crates can be good for balancing, and have the added bonus of being easy to stack :)

I have 2 jump poles from from old grey drain pipe - they did have pole covers on, but since the beasts detroyed those, they now have a lovely pair of grey poles! :D

You could get some old worn tyres from your local garage to put your poles on, they'll be glad to get rid of them I'm sure.

I would be worried about drain pipes as poles, surely if the horse lands on them they will spinter and be very sharp??

I just picked up 6 tyres from the garage, which are doing us ok for now (both whimpy jumpers) but they love people to take them away, think they wanted me to take a truck with me to get them lol. I will be getting some more, and finding some more poles soon.
