Home made showjumps (on a budget!)

Those wooden rails that you put on the side of your garden. Don't know what they're called but just paint them and you've got some poles

When I was little I had a very spooky pony and has my homework my RI told me to make some scary fillers.

Using cardboard we stuck pipe cleaners, ballons, tinsel you name it, the jump had it! They were fab and as long as they were kept dry they were fine. Lasted a long time aswell and super cheap! :)

Cones, small plastic blocks they use to block off roads, tyres etc. If you can get your hands on the big wooden pallets they deliver things on, you can saw them in half and paint them for fillers too. We have used large branches in the past for poles, shorter fence posts for skinny jumps etc. Old wooden gates you could saw bits off to make them shorter?

i get free tyres from my local garage i thread a pole thro them and hang them or uses them as wings that i can build up good thing is i dont need to treat them and they can live out all year!

Sometimes You just have to pinch the kids things....

My dad had a rush of blood to the head once and made us some wings by drilling holes into wood at the correct intervals and then filling tires with concrete and making us stand and hold them in position... Result was very slightly wonky but very cheap wings!!

If you go to your local garage type place and ask nicely about used tyres, they might let you have some for free... Then just pile them up/ thread over a pole as you like. Ask builders about excess pipes on the roadside (or just nick it at night...). Buy plywood and have a spending spree in Homebase with all the tester pots and those transfers... We also had barrels and also moved a water trough which leaked in between some wings so we had a water tray of sorts to jump!! Also play cones are good...

Another tip I'm a fan of is to go to Poundland and just buy biggish stuff there from the gardening section...

I got a load of cheap poles from a sawmill, they were about £4 each. I painted them with stripes!
I made some simple jump wings with 3" x 2" wood I got from a local DIY place, was £10 for enough wood for 2 wings stands. I made a 'x' shaped base and bolted an upright bit on, then I had to get a special drill-bit to made the holes big enough for jump cup pins. I painted them to match the poles.
I am gonna make some more out of decking wood cos it doesn't need painting.

Also I got 2 water butt stands (£7 each) to make jump stands, they're only about 1 1/2 foot high tho. We have tyres we can put on top of them to make them bigger.

I was gonna buy some big plant barrels but they cost £30 each, polyjumps are not much more.

You can get hay bale covers off ebay.

My dad is very good at DIY. He collected some scrap bits of timber and made my jumps.

He did the wings and fillers. Then, just buy a bucket of paint (or use extra thats not needed), and hey presto, brilliant wings, that costs next to nothing!

The poles we brought, but I have heard some people use drain pipes full with sand, very heavy, but would work I guess!

hope that helps

Careful doing this especially if you are on anything with even a slight slope to it! I had an accident when horse knocked a small tyre jump over and one of them bounced and rolled! Would never use them again.
