You know when you get bits of muck gathering on saddle under boots (for instance)? I've run out of that spray tack cleaner stuff with the orange label (is it Belvoir tack cleaner?) so has anyone got any suggestions for something similar? Do you think vinegar would work? Or do I just have to scrape away with my nails? (lovely look!)

I clean my tack with warm water with vinegar and a squirt of washing up liquid - I agree that soda crystals are also good at getting grease off of things

Same as the others say but you can also use an old pan scourer (a non stick one is best as they don't scratch at all) or the old trick of a ball of horsehair really does work especially if it's really strong from a draught horse for instance!

I dont see any reason why not but make sure you wash it off again quite quickly!

(perhaps do a patch test first just in case it takes the dye out!)
