Homemade long reins... how long to make them?

Just bought a set of rope plough reins (which are mega long) and wanted to know the length to cut the rope for long reining a large horse? Anyone know off the top of their head? Thanks.

Mine are 16ft, but most use 20ft

I agree 20ft is a good length for a horse - 16ft may be ok for a pony. I have 16ft and they are a tad short for my 17hh.
