Hello,

I am considering buying a traditional heavyweight colt who is CHAPS reg and sired by the very nice homozygous taraditional coloured Blank Cheque, and a CHAPS reg mare who is lovely in every way.

This lad is evenly marked with plenty of mane, tail and feather, and hes just a yearling. I belive he should make 14.2-15.2hh and think he may have stallion potential, so far he has an excellent temprement but I am aware this may chage as he gets older, and so would only keep him entire if he proved to be Homozygous and could pass the grading etc for the relavant societys.

My first point of intrest now is how to get my horse genetically tested for the Homozygous gene in the uk and gain the the supporting documentation? also how much will this cost?

I have phoned my vet who told me that it would be a case of a call out fee for them coming and getting blood samples and to look on the CHAPS website for registration details??? I could only see grading information on there.

Is there a private reputable company who test for the gene and issue certificates.

Sorry If I am being compleatly ignorant about this, any help much appreciated.

Your vet will have to forward the samples direct to the company, to prove they have not been tampered with, so you ought to trust them to recommend the right people.

Brilliant thanks, My vet although a highly thought of equestrian one has only been asked for this once before, hence not being to sure. I will probably try the Cornwall one first just to see for myself what result it brings back and if its positive speak to my vet again.

I can highly recommned Animal Genetics the same as the above they have tested all our anmals we have bred from one mare and we had three who turned out to be Homozygous for the Tobiano gene and two who were also Homozygous for the black gene as well.
all you need to do is pull 30/40 main and tail hairs out and put them in a ealed back they must be pulled not cut in order for the dna to be on the hair folical.
