Hi all, please can I have your thoughts/experiences on a Honda CR-V for towing a trailer with a 15hh and 16hh. Thanks in advance xxx

We tow with our CRV, an Ifor Williams 505 and usually just one 14.2 at around 450kg. We've had 2 14.2's in and it coped fine although not a long or particularly hilly journey. It's tow weight is 2000kg so have always been 200kg under, I think you would be over weight with 2 larger horses depending as well on your trailer weight. Some older ones and automatics also have lower towing weights. As we now only take J out it's a great car for general use and the towing we need it to do.

When I was looking to buy a new towing vehicle about three years ago I went to the local Honda dealership and was advised against it by the salesmen, who pointed me in the direction of the Landrover and Mitsubishi dealerships over the road! They were very honest at the Honda garage, but said that even sticking just under the towing weight (with two horses a bit smaller than yours) the CRV wouldn't be very nice to tow with as it wasn't designed as a workhorse. Their honesty did result in my mother buying a (non-towing) car from them though!

Mines always been fine but then I’ve only towed the big boy about 20times. I did tow him and my friends tb once and again it towed perfectly fine but I could definitely feel it a bit more.

I have a CRV and have towed my 15.2 cob who weighs in around 600kg in an older Wessex trailer and it towed really well, but you would not be legal with 2 horses in it (unless they are very lightweight horses!). They also recommend that when towing livestock you only tow to 80% of your vehicles capability for safety. I’m lucky that hubby has a Navara so when 2 horses need to go somewhere I just steal his car!!

Is it a new one? Most people who tow with them seem to do so with a 2.2 but friend just got a new one and says they are now are only 1.6.

Not sure about towing, but my parents have had their 2007 petrol 2l CRV for 7 years now. Except wear and tear (oil change, break pads etc) its never gone wrong and is on over 130,000.. very reliable cars!

They aren't a towing lover a local garage told me so I kept my freelander 2 but its gone wrong a million times up to the honda.

Yeah they only do turbo now and the guy said it would tow the same as 2.2 and i laughed and told him where to go. So my next one will not be a honda. I won't be getting another for a year or two but ive no idea what i will end up with, it needs to be eco enough to use as a everyday car too.
