Honeychop chaff - need an alternative

Hi. I've been feeding Honeychop original for years. My old pony can't eat hay and this has been perfect for him. However, the latest bag I bought has the chaff chopped REALLY coursely, it's very different to how it used to be - and he can't eat it. Has anyone else found this, or could it be a one-off? If they've changed the way it's cut, can anyone recommend a different brand of totally plain chaff that's cut quite finely? Thank you!

I use thunderbrooks herbal chaff, it’s really soft and fluffy.

Dengie Hi Fi senior is very soft, but contains alfalfa, so depends if you want to avoid that.

Have you tried contacting them and asking? It’s likely it’s just been a courser field cut but they would be able to say for sure.

I hadn't even thought of asking them . That's why I love the forums! And thanks for the recommendations. Yes, I try to avoid alfalfa, but will look at the other options x

Graze On is non molassed, soft and fine. Mine loves it and it forms the bulk of his evening feed.

Topchop zero is oat straw finely chopped

Any of the chopped dried grass products are usually quite fine, or if you need to beef things up, Silvermoor veteran haylage is a chop made entirely from ryegrass haylage.

Horsehage does a molasses and alfalfa free chaff, which if I remember rightly is very short chopped straw and soft.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I've writted to them, so will see if this is maybe a one-off (hopefully). But if not, that's given me a lot of other options to look at thanks. And he loves haylage (or used to, when he could eat it...!) so @Highmileagecob I'll definitely look into that as an occasional mid-winter treat

Honeychop Senior I think is a much softer chaff. You may also consider adding or changing to low sugar soaked fibre feed such as Simple Systems Haycare (Timothy) if his dental issues are progressing. My old boy couldn’t cope with chop.
