It’s doing the rounds on FB and thought it might be appreciated here too.

YOUR DOG IS NOT A BABY
Today's culture is absolutely ruining dogs.
People are treating their dogs like people, and no matter how much you say it, or what you think, they're not kids, they're dogs... A predator with forty-two teeth on the head and a bite pressure that can break bones.
They deserve to be treated like dogs!
Somehow treating your dog like a dog has become a taboo topic and it's because of today's mentality.
Can't say no to a dog.
I can't go with a dog in cold weather.
Can't let a dog get muddy.
Can't give a dog a job.
If your dog is in shape, he's too skinny.
We’re walking through a world where giving your dog a job is cruel beyond belief, but having a 30kg overweight dog with diabetes that can’t move is absolutely fine. Something totally distorted, twisted and wrong.
They are dogs! Treat them like dogs. You can't have any animals and pretend to be a baby. Hi this is my whale he is my baby. It doesn't work like that.
We need to push this current mentality back because it's literally killing dogs. Dogs are dying everyday simply because no one told them what rules they were supposed to follow or because they didn't get a job they so needed.
Let’s start honouring our dogs for the absolutely amazing creatures they are. Dogs are magnificent, majestic, intelligent and robust. To me they are the best animal on the planet so let's stop killing them and treat them for exactly what they aren't.
Honour your dog.

I think a lot of it comes from USA, lots of their articles talk about 'pet parents' and 'furbabies', both of which terms make me cringe. Then of course there's all the dressing up of dogs in human-style clothes and carrying them around in handbags that certain Z-list 'celebrities' indulge in.

Well, I've failed. It's 30mph winds and rain outside, plus cold, and I'm not sure we'll be walking today ? she went for a wee this morning but has since gone back to bed. She'd happily go for a walk if I asked her to, but we'll see.

Sorry ? I found the ears when cleaning our a wardrobe recently (idk where they came from, actually) and she was right there. However, this is not a regular practice and I don't view my dog as a fashion accessory.

I nearly made a faux-pas then and said 'what a beautiful staffie!' and then realised she's a lab ? But also beautiful!! She just looks quite small there!

She's got a meaty head ? and OH says she looks like a Pitbull when her ears are back ? I guess she really works those chewing muscles.

She is smaller for a Lab, and not fat. People do ask if she's young (she's about to be 3) or a mix. She was the smallest pup when I went to choose one, and that was fine with me. I liked her inquisitive and outgoing personality.

She is small though ?

She is a very similar type to ours, who are working-bred. They were brought up from 8 weeks old by a Rottweiler and learned their lessons well. It's wet and windy here today and they are refusing to go outside!

I know ? but she was so tolerant of having them on, bless her.

Yes, she is working-bred. Not many gun dog activities around here, unfortunately (mostly GSD stuff/clubs)...but it's almost swimming season again and she lives for that!

Ours strongly dislike rain, especially if it is blowing in your face but they love their trips to the river and ignored the Rottweiler's misgivings when we took them all to the beach last year.

Another one I saw on FB recently, for any working/sports bods:

Your dog gets absolutely nothing out of being competitive for you. Not a darn thing. Of course dogs are bred for specific jobs, or they’re bred to be athletic to a certain degree.

They have no idea how much money is added to the pot. They have no idea that this is a qualifier. They have no idea that this is the World.

And DESPITE us... DESPITE our nerves, our flaws, our incorrect cues, our huge emotions, they get the job done to their very best ability. Even when we fail them by letting our emotions get in the way, they come back and they try again. For US. Let that sink in. If only we could all be so understanding.

To think of an animal that is forgiving and flexible enough to put up with the repetition of practice, the intense nerves of the handler, the stress of hauling and they will still meet you at the end of their lead ready to go is MIND BLOWING.

If you haven’t done so lately. Thank your dog.

If you’re successful, thank the dogs that put you there and made you. Thank the dogs that gave everything they had for you simply because you ASKED them to.

If you’re still on the journey to success, thank the dogs that made you fall in love with your sport and who have helped give you the confidence to want to learn more and be better.

We can never stop learning as dog men and dog women, and by continuing our education. Every dog in our future will be better off.

Next time you head to the club, leave your ego at the door and thank your dog!

My dogs get plenty of exercise, but I never feel guilty if we miss a day because of bad weather (which they hate). Thankfully that’s far and in between and doesn’t happen often.

Both are currently covered in mud and fox ?

Yep, agree with the sentiments of the first post. Any vet will tell you that if the kids in a family need to be on a collar and lead, then the new puppy will grow up to be a nightmare. Without being unkind, dogs are not equal members of the family, they are dogs and should be brought up properly! Since having grandchildren, I have been surprised at how little training is carried out, and how it is thought acceptable for a strange dog to hurtle over to a small child. Thought I was just grumpy old woman....!

Mine are probably very spoiled. There are 3 dog beds in the lounge, plus 2 huge crates, yet Goose is my knee, Mitch is curled up on my OH’s chair, a recent occurrence. They are encouraged to cuddle with us on the recliner in the evening. Bear sleeps on our bed if the OH is on night shift. I want cuddly dogs, as long as they’re comfortable with that.

But they know they’re dogs, they do as asked, we’re pretty strict on what they’re allowed to do, we’ve been really strict on training, no running up to dogs/people. I wish all owners were as keen on teaching recall!

I cringed at a friend’s FB picture of her cocker dressed up, his body language was really unhappy, she said he hated it but had done it for the picture. That, I can’t understand. Unless it’s a necessary vet visit or for their safety, I don’t see why you’d put your dog through that (obv some dogs don’t mind).

Also calling adult dogs 'pups'

Oh dear, but we’ve been doing puppy treat time (9pm) for almost 20 years!

We couldn’t have children and our dog is very precious to us but he gets high quality dog food, he is nice and trim (hate seeing overweight dogs), my dog Walker always says how well trained he is. He knows quite a lot of tricks and I train him regularly to stimulate him mentally. We go out in all weathers - the secret is a Hurtta coat - they are brilliant. He gets wet and muddy but a towel dry and, if really filthy, a paw wash. He is not allowed to just get away with anything, despite the fact he can be stubborn sometimes. He’s sitting next to me on the sofa currently, as OH is cooking using the grill and he gets scared then, because the smoke alarm could go off. It went off once! Yes he’s a dog but I adore him and try to give him the sort of life a dog would want. I do sometimes put a silly hat on him (he has a birthday hat) but just for long enough to take a photo. He is a pub dog and v well behaved. Most of the time people don’t realise he was with us until we leave the pub ?

In my defence the photo of Summer in the Santa outfit was 10 mins before Mum was due to come round for the day at Christmas and I wanted the dog to run up to her and surprise her. Mum thought it was hilarious.

I can't abide dogs in silly outfits/dresses all of the time unless, like you say, its to surprise someone or its for a photo opportunity. Some dogs need coats on all the time when cold, those are the finer breeds that feel the cold and old dogs.
