Hoods rubbing manes??

Bottom of Badger's mane is in a bit of a state at the mo, the hood on his TO rug (that he's had on all the time when it's been cold) has rubbed it, not in one particular place and not bold or anything but he's got little tufty bits where his manes come out so it's gone all funny and thin.

Wondering if I should just take the hood off and put up with the mud? Just wondered what you guys do?
 
Got the same problem with my Section D's mane. She's missing a patch threequarters way down her neck. Hope it grows fast as we were going to show her this year!. Funnily enough, my Arab with a longer mane has been fine. I have been a bit cruel and taken off the hood, she seems OK with this at the mo but we haven't had too much rain or very cold weather recently.
 
My mare had this problem with one of her rugs. I cut a swuare out of a silk camisole that I had and stitched it into the neck cover.. worked a treat.
(don't tell hubby what i did, it was a present and not cheap :D)
 
My mare had this with her rug and having a very long mane it's not a good look! She's fairly broad across the chest, but wouldn't say she is particularly chunky. I wondered if a lycra hood underneath would stop it?
 
My horse has lost the bottom third of his mane every winter that I've had him. Has happened with different makes of rugs(Weatherbeeta,Fal,Rambo,Rhino,Shires),all of which fit him well and with and without hood liners/antirub vests. It grows back each spring/early summer,when he comes out of hooded rugs(he's clipped every winter). Have come to the conclusion he's just got poorly rooted mane&tail hair,that falls out/gets rubbed off easily.(His tail is long but not exactly thick as well and if anyone ever gets a clump of mane in their hand when mounting or say,jumping,him,it'll fall out!)
Have accepted now that, over Winter,he's never going to be starring in any Timotei or L'Oreal ads.....

^ Lightweight, narrow shouldered mare. I have given up putting neck rugs on her because they always are tight when she grazes (I've tried upteen different makes) and it's the tight area that rubs the mane out. TBH she is fine without the neck rug and lives out all year round, we molly-coddle our horses too much these days. :rolleyes: :D

I have found that the wug style rugs don't rub, so that could be worth trying.
