My highland pony has a sore hindleg and looks quite lame on it. My vet has been up several times and advised me to put him on box rest for a week. It made no difference. She tested his soles for sensitivity but did not think he was particulary sensitive in any area. She then flexed his fetlock back (holdong it as if she was picking his foot out) for one minute then asked me to trot him up and down again, this made him very lame.
Anyway, she's unsure right now to what it could be, so before getting him xrayed she wants me to treat his foot incase it could be an abcess. So I poulticed it and then when I came to remove it today and replace it, there was a thick black tar looking substance on the bottom of his foot under the poultice, which was down one side of his frog. What is this? If he did have an abcess, what would the puss look like? I cleaned it up and poulticed/bandaged him again after.
Thank you if anyone can help
