Hoof abscess but living out

Hi all,

My horse has had an abscess which had burst and drained but is still sore. He had a couple of nights in but now there is no stable so going to struggle to keep it dry.

Been told by farrier to get some blue spray and bring him to dry out for an hour a day, but does anyone have any personal experiences of abscesses in horses living out?

Get a nappy, gamgee or animalintex, vet wrap, duct tape and some old feed bags. Put the gamgee/animalintex over the abcess hole and secure with vet wrap, put the nappy over the top to hold it all together should the vetwrap fail. cut a square of plastic feed bag and place over the hoof and secure with duct tape. I wanting more protection put a hoof boot on over the set up. You can apply terramycin (blue spray) under all that bandaging and that will provide cushioning whilst terramycin kills off the bugs. Once horse is sounder I'd use keratex hoof putty to plug the hole and turnout as usual.
I've a couple of horses that live out 24/7 and i've done tubbing and poulticing with the nappy over the top and it's worked a treat.

I've got one at the moment. I've flushed it out with Sole Cleanse, left it to dry then stuffed it with Artimud and chucked the horse out, checking and adding more as needed. I have an exceptionally wet field and the 'mud' has stayed in there. If it was a big hole, I would start with Hoof Stuff.

Until I found out my mare was abscessing due to a feed allergy, she used to get abscesses all the time... got to a point where poulticing was not an option any more due to too many holes!!

Vet said in the end, to let them burst in the field, should take no longer than a couple of days to burst - said she wouldn't normally recommend it to people as they like her to "treat" the abscess when in fact abscesses naturally track out and heal up from the inside. So I did. One year she had no less than 7 in one year and I let every one do it's thing even in the mud and never had a problem with infections or anything - of course, she was hopping lame for maybe a day or two - hard to watch - but then would be running around like a hooligan again once it had popped.

Found out later she was intolerant to alfalfa - duly removed and no abcesses since.

I'd definitely recommend Red Horse Products. My horses live out 24/7 & my TB has a damaged coronet band, hence the hoof always grows with a large, deep crack. During the drier months the farrier applies glue, but in the wetter months the glue won't stick, meaning the Winter is particularly difficult for him. In the past an abscess has almost been the end of him as the whole hoof capsule become unstable - luckily we managed to stabilise it, & he's still here. Red Horse Products was recommended to me by a vet nurse friend & it's been amazing. After the last abscess a few months ago (the second within a few weeks), when i'd poulticed it until it was gone (using animalintex, nappies, vetwrap & duct tape), leaving a big hole, i started packing the hole in his hoof with Horse Stuff & filling the crack with Artimud. I now change the Horse Stuff packing once or twice a week, & replace the Artimud more regularly. No more abscesses since & my farrier was so impressed he is going to look into stocking these products.
