Hoof Abscess

I just discovered that mine has had an abscess...apparently, it came and resolved itself without anyone noticing (no lameness). There's a small hole on his sole where it broke through and drained. I'm guessing it was over Christmas---the pony was turned out without being ridden for about 10 days.

My trimmer felt that some vets tend to dig around too much and actually prolong the healing process by making massive holes. What do others think?

you can treat this whilst they are living out. Clean the hole, apply the poultice, wrap around several layers of gamgee/bandages then put foot in a large cut-off corner of a plastic feed bag and use electric or gaffa tape to secure it around the pastern area. The layers of padding help prevent the shoe or hoof from cutting through the bag and will also soak up excess moisture (preventing sogginess). Change daily.

I've treated my filly for 2 hoof abscesses and she lives out. She had 1 in her left front during the summer and 1 in her right front just a few weeks ago.
I put on a poultice, then cover the whole hoof with vetwrap, then cover all that with duct tape. Change it daily.
Would be easier to keep her in and treat her, but I don't have a stable so I've had to improvise
