Can a hoof abscess be managed without poulticing?

Reason I ask is that my horse had one in his back hoof about 6 weeks ago. Vet opened it up and poulticed it. I carried on poulticing it for a week til the pad was clear, he then stayed in for about 3 more days before going to his winter turnaway field.

However, poulticing became a nightmare. He would kick out, hop about etc, it was impossible to get near his back leg and hoof by the end of the week. I was so glad to see a clean pad so I could stop poulticing.

Unfortunately I have been to check him today and he is on his toe again. The field is really wet and so I am bringing him home to a dry stable tomorrow and the farrier or vet will be coming out.

But if they dig it out and I keep him on a dry bed, can it heal without poulticing? I really don't know how I will manage to get it done, it was a complete nightmare before. I am so disappointed it has come back.

I have read about putting hydrogen peroxide on it, or soaking it in epsom salts. Would I be able to do this instead of poulticing?

I would say be careful about not poulticing etc as I'm currently dealing with a reinfected abscess as although I poulticed etc I didn't give it long enough to heel and turned out 24/7 again to soon.

However In my case I dont think it was the fact it wasn't poulticed but that he was turned out again before the hole had cleared up enough so was easily reinfected.

What about a poultice boot? there are a few suggestions on this thread I have a shires type boot at the minute but am waiting for my equwelli to be delivered.

would he stand with the hoof in a bucket of hot water with Epsom salt in? if he would do this then maybe you could get a nappy on it and then a poultice boot so it would at least stay clean?

I mix sugar and iodine and pack that in the hole before hot poulticing but appreciate that is difficult on some horse especially on a hind. Abscess are awful blooming things
