Hi there,

I am bringing Ebony back into work and want at all costs to keep her unshod if I can, I really want to invest in a pair of hoof boots for her fronts because she can be a right pansy on the stones and she is flat footed which doesn't help. This is not a dietary issue for her, she is pretty much an 'all fibre' with a bit of oil and vits and minerals girlie, but she has always had 'issues' a bit of a 'princess and a pea' type of girl!

So for those of you that use or have used hoof boots, could you give me any feedback on what to get and what not to get, how long should I expect the boots to last and how do I measure her for them?

Many thanks,
Em

one of ours needed boots for a bit while we got her diet sorted. Easyboot gloves were the best for her as their sizes were the closest fit for her hoof shape.
Thesaddleryshop is pretty much the best place bar none for the answers to all your questions. They have pics of how to measure your horse, size charts for all the different boots so you can work out what would fit the best, you can buy them from there, and give them a ring if it still isn't making too much sense!!
Easyboot gloves would def be my recommendation if the sizes would suit your horse, they have also just brought out a wide fitting version too. You can get the fit kit for both of these which I would do as although I measured really carefully I was way out and it would have cost a fortune buying the wrong sizes!!

i have a set of Old Mac G2s which are good,
you need to measure the circumferance of the foot, beware though that some boots only fit certain shapes (i.e very round) :D

Yes, I noticed that, I was thinking of chatting to my farrier when he comes to trim them both in a couple of weeks and seeing if there are any that he think would suit her, I like the look of these two:

I'm just worried about things like rubbing etc. Hoof wise she is pretty standard in shape, average TB type hooves, but luckilly she has some strength in her hoof from the friesian side of her!. As I said I just want to make sure that what I buy won't rub, has anyone got any feed back for the 2 types above?

I did notice that the Mac G2s have a special neoprene thing that you can use with horses that rub. I actually don't think she will rub, she never had a problem with over reach boots in the past (which TBH I used more for peace of mind, they weren't really needed!) I am just a wee bit paranoid about the unknown! We won't be doing anything major, so not miles and miles, but it would be nice to know that we could do a few hours if we wanted to and do it comfortably :D

Also another question, do you find that you have to have the feet trimmed more often for the boots, are there any special things you have to do to keep the feet 'primed' for wearing the boots (if you get what I mean)

Cookies and milk for all those who made it this far :D

Thank you, thats really usefull :D

I have to use hoof boots on Vardi's fronts for hacking due to the fact he has side bones.

I looked at all types and decided on the Cavello Easy Boots for three reasons;

1. Best fit for him

2. Easy to get on and off for me!

3. Only £70.00 including gel pads and neoprene gaiters

Having said that the gaiters are rubbish and pinged up within minutes so I use the wonderful technological breakthrough which is a pair of Sainsbury's Mens size 11-13 socks:-) no rubbing easy on and off, washable and only £5 for 3 pairs.

Below is himself in a Chavtastic white pair:-)

I have only good things to say about them, they stay on perfectly, have good traction (we have some very steep tarmac roads and I have never had a problem) and are so easy to put on and off.

You need to measure from the front of the hoof to the Buttress line when your horse is newly trimmed, I got my farrier to do it for me.

Do you mind me asking which stockist you got them from to get the gel pads and gaitors inc at that price? Also do people generally use gel pads for a bit more comfort?

I'm very interested as this is the way I would like to go, buttress line is this at the top off the frog? Just before the heel? Sorry abit thick : /

I have a pair of Cavallos. They are superb, all leather and has never rubbed my boy as it is leather inside too. Had them just over a year now and still not needing another pair yet. So easy to use.

They usually come with gel inserts. Make sure you measure correctly though or you will have to keep sending back for different sizes. My trimmer got me mine.

Thats the impression I get, yes. I found this link here, although I think I will do it with my farrier there, since she needs to be properly trimmed prior to measuring it makes sense to get him to help with the measurement to.

I love mine too especially as I was also looking at a pair of old Macs and the guys at Pre equestrian (considering the Old Macs were twice the price!) said the Cavello's would be a better fit for my horses feet.

No rubbing at all either, I just wash the boots off with water and wipe with an oiled cloth in and out to keep them supple, the socks are purely to keep the inside of the boots as clean and hygienic as poss and give extra cushion around the fetlock plus I love hacking him out in his "Peter Jones" stripy specials :-)

another recommendation for Cavallos. my horse has quite round feet and dishes a bit and although I liked the look of the Gloves, they twisted. Cavallos are good, no rubbing or twisting, easy to fit. I have the Sports and the old style and tend to use the sports just after a trim and the others later on. I have EVA pads in mine as the Cavallo ones squeaked :D saying that, I'm not using any boots at the moment as he's not needing them.

I used the saddlery shop measuring service. They looked at the size/shape of my pony's feet and recommended the boots which would fit him the best.
I bought Old Mac G2s which fit the hoof very well. Had no issues with the boots slipping round.

BUT when I used the gaiters which came with the boots it was impossible to do up the straps which hold the boots on. So I took the boots to the saddlers and had them add some length on to the straps. I do have a very chunky pony though.

Guys, thank you all for your input and help. I think I am now sold on the Cavallos, sooooo tempting to get pink:D But I think I would get booted one:D One fiiiiiiinal question: what is the main difference between the sport and the simple ones? I was thinking of going for the simple but for the small difference in price I don't want to not get the sport if they will be better for her

As I said, we don't do MILES

I was told that the sport ones were more for arena work and the Simple boots were more robust for hacking.

GET PINK :-))))

Oh and the Sport boots are a 5mm narrower on all sizes than the simple boot so will depend on the width of your horses foot.

i.e Simple are equal length and width and sport are 5mm narrower on the width than the length. so if your horse has narrow hooves may be better.

Well don't look at the Pre-Equestrian rug section then:-) last time I did they were selling fleeces for £14.00 so I stockpiled 5 for future use!

Oh god don't, I can't bear it! I actually WANT 2 Premier Equine Rugs the Trio type for 250 each but its pointless getting for ben as he is still growing, he is fitting into the 6.3 he has but only just, so I want to get a medium 6.6 for him this year, and I am sure that somewhere I have a medium amigo in a 6.3 for ebony but am damned if I can find it. I will probably wait in the trio until next year and buy for them both together. So for now its 1 (possibly 2)medium, they won't be clipped so no HW needed as they are in all winter.

I also want to buy a magnetic poll guard thingy for ebony for when she gets a bit dippy about her poll, she can get a sort of head ache and I think this will help her loads.

I have also decided that ben will be going away in June for a month to be proffesionally brought on, to learn the basics, this is going to cost me £380. Plus I need a holiday. If I go mad crazy on rugs the holiday will bite the dust and OH will be very angry at me, we already missed our last holiday because I wouldn't leave ebony... bless him the horsey widow :D

Trundles off to look at pre-equestrian...

have a look around for second hand hoofboots. I got a second hand pair of cavello's off preloved, hardly worn but for a lot less than brand new
