My horse wears shoes on his front hoofs but not the back! I have to ride on road to get to any grass paths or beach and i am wondering if it would be ok for him to have shoes on front and hoof boots on the back hooves? I dont want him shod on his back hooves as he is known for kicking out at my pony but he is wee bit tender in his back hooves when on the road! Has anybody ever done anything like this?

Does he need them on behind, 75% of body weight is borne on the front feet, most horses really dont need shoes behing.

Ted my old TB never had shoes on behind and he was hacked.

As above unless you are doing excessive amounts of road work or your horse has soft crumbley feet he should be fine without anythin on the hinds.

My horse went 6 months of riding on roads, fields, gravel etc with no shoes on the back and it did her feet no harm at all. I finally found boots to fit the back so I can do faster work over gravel and have better traction when it's really muddy (we live near a really big muddy hill and shoes or bare foot just doesn't give enough grip!) She only gets boots on when I'm going on these hacks, the rest of the time she os only booted on the fronts.

Thanks im not really sure what to do! He doesn't have great feet and i dont want to damage them! He is quite prone to getting abscesses in his left hind! What boots do you use?

I use the easyboot glove on the hinds as it's the only boot that would fit. My girl has typical TB diamond shaped hind feet and most boots are designed for fronts so just twist off her silly shapped feet!
